Season
2001/2
On
a bright and sunny Saturday morning, on 1st July 2001, a group of
parents with soccer keen children living in the parish of Leigh
gathered, looking to create a footballing outlet for their
youngsters. The club’s aim was then, and still is to this day, to
enable all it’s members to be able to learn, play, and enjoy
football, in a structured and safe environment, no matter what their
ability!
At
that very first coaching session, run by the two founder coaches,
Neil Coleman and Bosko Medakovic, held at Leigh & Bransford
Primary School, twelve youngsters of varying primary school ages and
abilities, attended. These so called founding members (ages in
brackets) were: Jack Coleman (7), Toby Coleman (4), Nick Medakovic
(7), Chris Medakovic (4), Jack Hawthorn (6), Matty Hawthorn (4),
Megan King (9), Christopher King (6), Callum Ross (8), Ollie Green
(7), Ollie Harcombe (5), and Elliot Cauldwell (5).
This
number grew steadily over the months that followed, with a total of
48 children attending the regular weekly coaching sessions, by the
end of the first year. It should also be noted that, in accommodating
youngsters from as early as age four, the club became the first in
the area to offer football coaching sessions to children of that age!
With
it's founding Editor, Neil Coleman, at the helm, in October 2001 the
first edition of the now regular monthly club newsletter was
launched; known as the ‘Badgers Scene’. Introduced
initially as a
means of keeping the ever increasing number of club staff and
membership updated on matters in and around the club at that
particular time, this long running publication has since continually
remained in circulation to this day, albeit now mainly in an
electronic format!
As
parental interest grew, volunteers agreed to undertake various roles
within the club from administration through to coaching. Soon after,
the club's management Executive Committee was formed and held its
first ever meeting in the local Royal Oak public house in Leigh
Sinton, in December 2001.
From
this, appropriate officers were duly elected into key posts, and in
particular, Stuart Snowdon was appointed as the first ever Club
Chairman, Bosko Medakovic it's first Vice Chairman, Gill Ross its
first Treasurer, and Sue Hawthorn, it’s first Secretary, with
Bosko
Medakovic and Neil Coleman confirmed as the club’s first two
formal
Coaches.
The
club was soon to be formally constituted and recognised officially as
Leigh & Bransford Badgers Football Club (L&BBFC). Affiliation
to the Worcestershire Football Association (WFA) was soon to follow
as a prime objective for the newly established Executive Committee.
Also
in setting up the new club, it's individual identity was further
enhanced by the introduction of it's now familiar club logo, the
Badger. This was designed by Promoter, Neil Coleman and has since
been featured on all official club headed information, clothing, and
other publicity, making L&BBFC instantly recognisable within the
footballing and local community!
As
with any other voluntary organisation, fundraising became a focus of
attention and effort, and after several enquiries, local businessman,
John King of John King Car & Commercial Vehicle Services, agreed
to become the club’s first ever sponsor. The first of his many
subsequent generous donations was used to help the club source a much
needed new team kit along with some additional equipment, as
membership continued to grow at a steady pace.
Meanwhile
on the playing side, the club was also developing rapidly and the
members were becoming increasingly keen to play against opposition
other than their club mates. This soon followed as sporting their
newly acquired soccer strip, styled in their now familiar black &
white club colours, the very first match the club played was on
Saturday, 10th November 2001.
An
eleven a side friendly encounter was arranged at local rivals and
parish neighbours, Suckley Wanderers FC, a club they were again to
meet in various Mercian Festival Junior Football League encounters
later on, under the name of Suckley Harriers FC.
The
hosts had been running for several seasons longer than the Badgers,
and this seemed to show in the two games that were arranged, one at
U11’s and one at U9’s. Fielding players predominantly of an
older
age than the Badgers, it was not surprising that Suckley won the
senior game 7-1, despite the Badgers competing well throughout the
tie.
However,
in the more even aged younger game, the result was a closely
contested 1-1 draw. This end to end encounter provided great
entertainment for the many supporters who gathered, and could have
ended in favour of the young Badger’s side who narrowly missed
out
on victory, having had a penalty saved late on in the game!
The
event itself attracted the interests of around 120 or so vocal
supporters from both sides, including local historian, Malcolm Scott,
who subsequently immortalised the occasion in his book about the
history of life in the parish entitled; ‘The Book of Leigh &
Bransford – the Parish Past & Present’.
In
what had been a great first season of progress and establishment, the
club celebrated it's inaugural year with an end of season
presentation night held at the local Memorial Hall. Around 100
members and guests attended to watch youngsters receive club medals
from guest presenter, Graham Selby, the former Worcester City FC
fullback.
Season
2002/3
Following
a series of other friendly games, it became apparent that competitive
play was very much in demand from the members and consequently an
application to the then Mercian Elgar Junior Football League (MEJFL)
was made and accepted.
Success
in this respect would see the club play regular competitive football
at U9’s and U11’s levels from the start of the 2002/3
season,
with Neil Coleman and Bosko Medakovic at the helm of each team,
respectively.
However,
following a baptism of fire in what were their debut seasons, the two
teams did settle down to eventually notch several creditable results.
Most notable was a 2-1 win by the L&BBFC U11’s over a strong
Evesham United Robins FC, who had earlier in the season trounced them
15-0! But despite this fantastic turn around result, the U11’s
were
still unable to avoid finishing the campaign with the ‘wooden
spoon’.
With
slightly more points in the bag than their older age club mates, the
U9's ended their season in a respectable tenth spot in the league. A
convincing 5-0 victory over neighbours, Newtown Sports Juniors, being
the pick of their performances, which in itself established a club
record for the highest win at mini soccer level!
The
MEJFL playing record for both these two competing squads read as
follows: -
U9’s
– Pld 20, Won 4, Drew 3, Lost 13, GF 18, GA 53, Pts 11.
U11’s
– Pld 24, Won 1, Drew 3, Lost 20, GF 11, GA 136, Pts 5.
MEJFL
Cup success was short lived for both sides as neither squad could
make it beyond the early rounds; the U9's crashing out in round one,
to a 2-1 defeat at Severn City Juniors FC, whereas the U11's having
had a bye in round one, were then eliminated 5-1 by Lyppard Rangers
FC in round two!
Meanwhile,
the club also continued to offer a programme of coaching for its
U7’s
under the guise of a non-competing and mixed gender, Development
Squad, with ages ranging from 4 to 6 years. This was a policy it was
wise to maintain as the older members of this squad would generally
progress to form the basis of the following years U8’s Squad, who
in turn at the time were eligible to compete at U9’s level in
their
own right, until the short lived emergence of the league’s new
Under 8’s Division.
The
end of season presentation disco took place again at the local
village hall with around 130 members and their guests attending to
see MFJFL Chairman, George Silverman, present the youngsters with
their medals.
Rounding
off this season saw Bosko Medakovic, Senior Club Coach, being
presented the Worcestershire Football Association’s
‘Volunteer Of
The Year 2003’ award for his services to the game. In addition,
Bosko was subsequently nominated by the WFA for the Football
Associations's (FA) National Awards.
At
its AGM, club co-founder Neil Coleman was elected in to the post of
Club Treasurer due to Gill Ross' resignation, with all other key
personnel remaining in post for the coming twelve month period.
Season
2003/4
Continual
growth of the club meant that by the start of the 2003/4 season,
teams were entered into the newly re-named Mercian Festival Junior
Football League (MFJFL) at U9’s x 2; one of which, the Cubs,
would
actually play with all it’s youngsters of U8’s age,
U10’s, and
U12’s levels.
The
club also needed to acquire a full size pitch for it’s
U12’s who
had now progressed to youth football, and this became available at
the local Memorial Hall, with the remaining younger teams continuing
to play mini soccer at the local school.
Also,
kicking off in this new season, the club launched it’s very own
website; www.lbbfc.co.uk, courtesy of sponsor, Worcester IT, with
coach, parent, and business owner, Greg Evans taking on the new club
role of Website Manager. The site offered readers much in the way of
useful information about the club, it’s squads, and relevant
football agencies, and is still in operation to this day!
A
generally better season followed for the club’s two established
sides, who both managed to improve upon performances on their
previous season. Indeed the U12's began their campaign with a 3-1
moral boosting win against Bromyard Town FC; a team that had beaten
them 9-1 the last time they met; although it has to be said, this
proved to be their only victory of the season and didn't help them
avoid another bottom place finish!
The
U10's, meanwhile finished their season in fifth place in the U10's
Division Two. In a more evenly contested league, this Badgers side
made good progress upon the previous season, to win as many games
this time round as they lost, and duly settled for a well earned and
respectable top five finish.
Highlight
of the season for the club fell to the U9’s Badgers, who finished
third in the U9’s Division One, as well as reaching their
respective MFJFL cup semi final, in what was only their debut season!
As it was though, it took a slender 2-1 defeat by Newtown Sports
Juniors FC, to deny this squad a richly deserved place in the
final.
The
also newly formed L&BBFC U9’s Cubs side, who as mentioned
before, were actually all of U8’s age, found life tough in their
debut season. Playing against players who in turn were of a
predominantly older age, the Cubs acquitted themselves rather well
but were unable to avoid finishing their season at the foot of the
U9’s Division Two! A league win eluded them all season, but this
side did manage to record league points courtesy of two very hard
fought draws.
The
full MFJFL playing record of these four competing sides read: -
U9’s
Badgers – Pld 12, Won 6, Drew 2, Lost 4, GF 15, GA 23, Pts 14.
U9’s
Cubs – Pld 12, Won 0, Drew 2, Lost 10, GF 3, GA 43, Pts 2.
U10’s
– Pld 14, Won 6, Drew 2, Lost 6, GF 25, GA 28, Pts 14.
U12’s
– Pld 24, Won 1, Drew 1, Lost 22, GF 10, GA 201, Pts 4.
But
for the MFJFL cup semi final exploits of the U9's Badgers, the second
round elimination of the L&BBFC U10's, 1-0 to Ombersley Colts,
was the nearest any other club side had come to reaching their
respective cup final.
Of the remaining two
other
club squads, the Cubs lost 2-0 at Welland Juniors FC whereas the
U12's sank to a 4-0 defeat against Goodrest Juniors FC, both in round
one.
Meanwhile,
the newly created L&BBFC Staff & Parents’ team; who would
eventually become known as the 'Legends', set up for fun and social
activities, had a more fruitful return, winning the Motor Neurone
Disease sponsored Tug of War Cup at the local village Memorial Hall
Fayre. Under the leadership of Team Captain, Neil Coleman, the
Legends team pulled themselves to victory winning all their bouts en
route to success!
Again
the Legends proved themselves victorious soon after. This time
lifting the Burton Printworks sponsored Family Fun Day Challenge Cup,
courtesy of a 6-5 win over Bromyard Tae Kwon Do in the local village
Family Fun Day soccer event!
A
brilliant long range drive from the impressive young Alessio Adorisio
with around five minutes to go ensured that the Legends would become
the inaugural winners of this local village competition.
Season
2004/5
The
season 2004/5 saw the club run a record seven squads, at U9’s x
3,
U10’s, U11’s x 2, and U13’s. To accommodate this
expanse, the
club acquired the long term use of several pitches in the
neighbouring parish of Powick, at the former hospital site just a few
miles from their Leigh Sinton heartland.
However,
it was in the October of this season, that the club achieved its
biggest success to date. For all it's endeavours in ensuring that the
club was being well run, Leigh & Bransford Badgers FC was duly
awarded status under the Football Association's Charter
Standard programme as a 'Charter
Standard'
Club.
This
national recognition was seen as a just reward for all the hard work,
commitment, and dedication shown by everyone connected with the club
over its short history, and helped establish the Badgers as a
reputable football outlet at a grass roots level, within the local
footballing fraternity!
Neil
Coleman, the newly elected Club Treasurer & Promotions, and Sue
Hawthorn, Club Secretary & Child Welfare, were instrumental in
guiding the club towards this achievement; ensuring key matters were
addressed throughout the process, aided by the regular efforts of the
rest of the club's volunteer staff.
On
the playing front, most notably, the L&BBFC U10’s came close
in
their league cup campaign; yet again falling at the semi-final stage
for the second year running. This time, a 2-0 defeat to eventual cup
winners and league champions Malvern Town Wanderers FC put paid to
any hopes of a first ever Badger’s cup final appearance.
Sadly
though, as far as the club's other MFJFL cups exploits were
concerned, round one eliminations befell all the remaining L&BBFC
sides. The Albion fell 2-1 to Welland Juniors Colts FC, the
Wanderers lost 4-1 at Evesham United Robins FC, the Badgers slid to a
2-0 loss against Worcester Wizards FC, the Greys lost 3-1 at Severn
City Juniors FC, the Brocks went down 2-1 against Newtown Sports
Colts FC, and the U13's crashed 5-2 at Worcester Raiders FC.
Meanwhile,
the L&BBFC U13’s set two new youth soccer club records.
Firstly
they slumped 24-0 in a record defeat against league champions, Norton
Athletic FC. However, they then went on to redeem themselves
somewhat, and set a new record victory, with a 12-0 success over
bottom side Lyppard Rangers Pumas FC, in their very last match of the
season!
The
new L&BBFC U9’s Badgers, who where last season’s
U9’s Cubs
side, had a much more comfortable time of things this time round.
Having fared better against more even aged opponents, this young side
put in several notable performances and were consequently,
comfortably able to avoid retaining the wooden spoon with a tenth
place finish!
Highlight
of the season for this young Badger's side saw them set a club record
for the highest win at mini soccer level. Sadly though, their 9-0
victory was against their MFJFL debutant club mates, the U9's
Wanderers, and surpassed the 5-0 win over Newtown Sports Juniors,
also set by a previous L&BBFC U9's in the 2002/3 season!
The
newly formed L&BBFC U9’s Wanderers & L&BBFC
U9’s
Albion squads, who were made up of players predominantly of U8’s
age, had more challenging debut seasons. The Albion acquitted
themselves well finishing a creditable eighth, whereas the Wanderers
found life much tougher indeed.
A
crushing 17-0 defeat of the Wanderers by league champions, Welland
Juniors FC, set an unwanted new club record mini soccer defeat.
However, this young side went on to improve and most notably took the
scalp of Worcester Wizards FC, 3-2, having previously been beaten 6-1
by them earlier in the season. But despite this steady improvement,
the Wanderers could not avoid finishing the season bottom of the
pile!
In
what was the first ever competitive club side derby encounter, the
stronger Albion squad had the better of the two exchanges against the
Wanderers. A 1-0 score line in the first game saw the Albion
temporarily gain the club 'bragging rights', whereas a 1-1 draw in
the return match saw evidence of a much improved Wanderers side.
Another
good season saw the U10's improve upon their last campaign. With more
than double the number of games played this time round, the Badgers
recorded some great results against some of the higher placed teams,
to help them into a fourth place finish.
The
Club's two U11's squads, the Brocks and the Greys both had good but
challenging campaigns and produced some creditable performances. The
Brocks, finishing eighth in Division One, recorded a remarkable 5-3
win over Severn City Juniors FC, having trailed 3-0 at half time! The
Greys meanwhile, who competed in Division Two, notched a fine 5-0
over Kempsey Colts FC, en route to a ninth place finish.
The
full MFJFL playing record of the seven competing sides during this
season read: -
U9’s
Albion – Pld 26, Won 9, Drew 4, Lost 13, GF 28, GA 50, Pts 22.
U9’s
Badgers – Pld 26, Won 6, Drew 3, Lost 17, GF 22, GA 59, Pts 15.
U9’s
Wdrs – Pld 26, Won 1, Drew 1, Lost 24, GF 9, GA 151, Pts 3.
U10’s
– Pld 32, Won 16, Drew 6, Lost 10, GF 71, GA 59, Pts 38.
U11’s
Greys – Pld 30, Won 5, Drew 2, Lost 23, GF 32, GA 114, Pts 12.
U11’s
Brocks – Pld 27, Won 7, Drew 3, Lost 17, GF 50, GA 101, Pts 17.
U13’s
– Pld 24, Won 3, Drew 0, Lost 21, GF 30, GA 103, Pts 9.
The
season ended with an AGM that saw two changes within the Club's
Executive Committee. Club Secretary & Safeguarding Officer, Sue
Hawthorne was unable to continue for work reasons and club parents
Sharon Miles being duly elected to cover the Secretarial role, with
Kate Thackeray acting as Safeguarding Officer.
Season
2005/6
Seven
sides were again admitted to compete in the Mercian Festival Junior
Football League, including one in the newly formed U8’s Division.
Teams in the U9’s x 2, U10’s, U11’s, U12’s,
& U14’s
would also represent the club in it’s 2005/6 campaign. Recent
changes to the Club’s squad set up saw last season’s two
U11’s
sides merge to form this season’s new U12’s squad.
The
club was successful in its bid to acquire planning approval for use
of a field as a new home for it’s mini soccer squads, to be known
as the Ralph’s Field Stadium. The development would see the club
able to expand to accommodate more squads, offering two new mini
soccer pitches, a club shop, car park, and training area, in time for
the start of the following season.
This
new ground formed part of the Guinness Park Farm estate, which was
later to acquire fame as one of the properties (Biffa) on the
Worcester edition of the long standing popular family board game,
Monopoly!
Meanwhile,
the L&BBFC Legends were successful again in the Burton Printworks
sponsored Family Fun Day Challenge Cup. A 3-3 draw against Bromyard
Tae Kwon Do X1 was enough to allow them to retain the Burton
Printworks Cup!
Trailing
3-2 with seconds remaining, a last ditched headed strike from
forward, Bosko Medakovic, secured a draw for the Legends, in what was
another thrilling tie, played in front of around 150 cheering
spectators at the local Memorial Hall.
Of
the several changes in club personnel, the most notable change
occurred in February 2006, when Mark Smith was duly elected the new
Club Chairman, taking over this mantle following the resignation of
Stuart Snowdon for personal reasons. Also, in what was another first
for the club, Cherylin Smallwood became the first female FA qualified
coach, and took up the reigns of the newly formed L&BBFC U8's.
Action
on the pitch saw the U8’s become the first Badger’s side
ever to
gain league honours, landing the Mercian Festival Junior Football
League’s U8’s Division title in it’s inaugural
season. Playing
in their very first league campaign together, this squad led the
Division from the start, as well as finishing as the Division’s
top
goal scorers with an impressive 33 goals in only 16 games, and losing
just one!
After
finishing bottom in their debut season last year, the L&BBFC
U9’s
Wanderers, proved to be the surprise package in the Division One,
finishing in an incredible fifth place after what could only be
described as a very impressive campaign.
This
squad took only three points in the whole of the previous season,
suffering some very heavy defeats in the process. However, they
showed great maturity and improvement to finish their season with a
far greater points tally, 29 in total; the most by any Badgers squad
during that season!
Meanwhile
the other L&BBFC U9’s squad, the Albion, also had a great
season, despite finishing one place below their club mate rivals! In
what was a highlight for the Albion, an emphatic 8-0 victory in a
game versus Droitwich Spa Conkers FC almost saw them match the club
record win at mini soccer level.
The
U10's had a slightly more difficult campaign this season than the
last. The pick of their performances saw them complete a league
double over bottom side Lyppard Rangers FC, 2-1 and then 3-2 en route
to an eighth place finish.
Our
U11's found this season more of a struggle then in their previous two
campaigns. With several players moving on and a new team coach, the
Badgers battled gamely towards a final placing of sixth in Division
One; their lowest at mini soccer level.
For
the first time ever, this year disappointingly saw a Badgers squad
finish their season without any points on the board. It has to be
said though, that the newly formed L&BBFC U12’s would have
avoided this unwanted honour had bottom club, Malvern Town Wanderers
FC, not withdrawn from the league part way through the season, which
subsequently meant that the Badger’s only league victory at that
point in time, a 2-0 win over a now defunct Malvern side, had to be
expunged!
Meanwhile,
our U14’s produced their best ever season to date, finishing
twelfth and registering their first ever league ‘double’
victory
along the way. This came courtesy of two very closely contested 3-2
wins over a plucky Redditch based, Headless Cross FC.
The
full MFJFL playing record for the competing seven sides read: -
U8’s
– Pld 16, Won 11, Drew 4, Lost 1, GF 33, GA 9, Pts 26.
U9’s
Albion – Pld 24, Won 10, Drew 8, Lost 6, GF 33, GA 20, Pts 28.
U9’s
Wdrs – Pld 24, Won 11, Drew 7, Lost 6, GF 50, GA 37, Pts 29.
U10’s
– Pld 24, Won 5, Drew 3, Lost 16, GF 24, GA 75, Pts 13.
U11’s
– Pld 18, Won 7, Drew 1, Lost 10, GF 37, GA 44, Pts 15.
U12’s
– Pld 14, Won 0, Drew 0, Lost 14, GF 11, GA 69, Pts 0.
U14’s
– Pld 26, Won 5, Drew 0, Lost 21, GF 33, GA 172, Pts 15.
As
far as the league cup competitions were concerned, this year didn't
produce any great runs with all but two sides being eliminated in the
first round. The U11's couldn't make it a third semi final in
succession after losing 2-0 at Malvern Town Wanderers FC again. The
U10's fell 5-3 at Newtown Sports Juniors FC, the U12's lost 4-1 at
Northside Colts FC, whereas the U14's also went down 4-1 at
Callowbrook Swifts FC.
Only
the two U9's squads, made it through to round two where they also
then fell; the Albion lost at Worcester Wizards FC, 2-1, whereas the
Wanderers were beaten 4-0 by Welland Juniors FC.
Off
the field, one particular club side did gain some success. The
L&BBFC
U12’s finished runners up to Headless Cross FC U14’s in the
league’s 'Fair Play' Awards 2005/6. This achievement went a very
long way towards lifting the spirits of the U12’s following their
very challenging year!
Furthermore,
as Headless Cross FC were not affiliated to the WFA, the L&BBFC
U12’s, were subsequently also nominated by the MFJFL as
its’
representative in the WFA’s County Fair Play Awards 2005/6,
instead.
Ironically,
it seemed that the U12’s failure to register a single league
point
all season served all the more to demonstrate to everyone, that you
don’t necessarily have to be the best team in the whole of the
Mercian Festival Junior Football League, to have been able to play
the game in a fair-minded and respectful manner!
This
season also saw another first for the club, with the L&BBFC
U14’s
team representing the Badger’s in it’s first ever
Worcestershire
FA County Youth Cup foray. However, this campaign was somewhat short
lived as the squad crashed at home to an 11-1 defeat at the hands
eventual winners, Enville Athletic FC, in the first round!
In
the July of this season, the Club celebrated its Fifth Anniversary.
To mark this milestone, a special presentation was made to the
remaining five founder members of the original twelve, who were still
active within the club.
Complimentary
sports vouchers were awarded to Jack Coleman, Nick Medakovic, Chris
Medakovic, Ollie Harcombe, and Jack Hawthorn, who were duly
recognised for their continued loyalty to the club since it was first
formed back in July 2001. In addition, club staff members, Neil
Coleman and Bosko Medakovic, the two founding staff members, were
also recognised for their continuous service during this period.
At
the end of this season, Club Secretary, Sharon Miles was unable to
continue in post and following election at the AGM, club parent,
Carrie Chambers was appointed to cover this role for the foreseeable
future. In addition, Morven Smith was duly appointed to act as Club
Safeguarding Offer to replace Kate Thackeray who also was unable to
continue.
Season
2006/7
For
the start of the 2006/7 season, the continually expanding club
entered a new record of ten sides in the Mercian Festival Junior
Football League; 1 x U8’s, 1 x U9’s, 3 x U10’s, 1 x
U11’s, 1
x U12’s, 2 x U13’s, and 1 x U14’s.
As
well as playing competitive games at the new Ralph’s Field
Stadium
for the first time following it’s newly laid surface, the club
also
made a return to the local Memorial Hall Ground for league games,
after a two season absence, which had also undergone recent levelling
and re-seeding work.
Furthermore,
following the success of its U7’s Development Squad, for the
first
time since the Club began; a separate Girls squad was formed in the
September of this year. Operating from the grounds of the local
primary school, the newly created U7’s Girls Development Squad
was
set up to enable girls aged 4-6 to be able to join the club and
develop their skills, understanding, and enjoyment, independently to
the Boys.
Coached
by the newly appointed GDS Coach (FA Level 1), Maria Hooper, it was
envisaged that this group would develop into competing soccer squads
in their own right, and be able to participate in local girls leagues
in times to come, should they wish to do so.
For
the second season running, the L&BBFC U9’s lifted their
relevant league title, but this time though, the drama went all the
way down to the final league game of the season in true championship
style!
Going
into the last MFJFL fixture of the season, the L&BBFC U9’s
were
locked level on points with their Newtown Sports Junior Colts FC
counterparts, who also held the edge over the Badgers, on goal
difference. A win was therefore needed by the Badgers, who in turn
had to hope that Newtown failed to do likewise!
Hopes
of a second title became a reality when news came through that
Newtown had suffered a 1-0 defeat at home to Ombersley Colts FC,
whereas the Badgers duly recorded a convincing 4-1 win away at
Oldbury Park Tigers Gold FC, to take the points. With this victory
came the MFJFL’s U9’s Division title, and in the process,
they
also denied Newtown a possible league and cup double!
Of
the remaining nine other competing Badger’s squads, the newly
formed L&BBFC U13’s Colts also had a fantastic year. They
finished fourth in their debut season, accumulating 55 points and
scoring 107 goals in the process, the most by any L&BBFC squad
this season.
This
being all the more remarkable given that this squad was mainly formed
from several players of two previous but now defunct sides, who were
still looking to continue playing despite the demise of their former
teams.
However,
having competently battled their way through a very competitive
fixture list, the Colts’ most notable result also saw them end
their season as the only team to have won against an otherwise
unbeaten league and cup winning side, Newtown Sports Junior Colts FC,
with a remarkable 6-4 victory late on.
In
actual fact, such was the closeness of this league that a final day
victory could even have landed the Colt’s the MFJFL U14's
Runners-up spot. But alas, this was not to be as this new club side
crashed to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of the eventual Runners-up,
Callowbrook Swifts FC.
Meanwhile,
there were also several other notably high final league place
finishes for the Badgers, with three other squads, the L&BBFC
U8’s, L&BBFC U10’s Albion, and the L&BBFC
U10’s Villa
all ending their campaigns within a top five slot! Of these sides,
the Villa squad also had the distinct honour in being the only side
to have won against their otherwise unbeaten U10’s Division Two
league champions, Burlish Harriers FC, with a fine 2-0 victory.
As
for the Albion side, a final U10’s Division One fourth place
finish
was the highest they had achieved in their short three season
history. Whereas for the L&BBFC U8’s, their highlight of the
season saw them fight their way back from 2-0 down to share the
spoils, 2-2, against an undefeated and runaway league champions,
Evesham United Robins FC side, to finish fourth.
Meanwhile,
the league season also produced a first for the sixth placed L&BBFC
U10’s Wanderers. A hard fought 4-2 win saw them record their
first
ever league victory over their U10’s Division One club mates, the
Albion, in seven attempts, which also included three draws!
Having
a good season, our U11's battled their way to a comfortable eighth
place finish in what was their last season of mini soccer. A double
over Welland Juniors Lions, 4-2 & 1-3 late on in the season,
helped the Badgers to climb the table.
Despite
a brave campaign throughout in which they did all manage to record
league points, three club sides, the L&BBFC U12’s, L&BBFC
U13’s Greys, and the L&BBFC U15’s, encountered a very
challenging season. Try as they might though, these club sides
subsequently found themselves rooted to the foot of the table!
However,
both the L&BBFC U13’s Greys and the L&BBFC U15’s
produced
some creditable displays along the way, and in particular games, both
sides returned from 3-0 down to eventually draw 3-3 in the league
against their respective opponents, Welland Juniors FC and
Callowbrook Swifts FC. Whereas, in another very entertaining
game, a fine 4-2 win at Worcester Raiders FC proved to be the
highlight of the L&BBFC U12’s season.
The
final MFJFL playing records for the ten competing Badger’s sides
this season read as follows:
U8’s
– Pld 21, Won 7, Drew 9, Lost 5, GF 32, GA 28, Pts 23.
U9’s
– Pld 26, Won 23, Drew 2, Lost 1, GF 82, GA 14, Pts 48.
U10’s
Albion – Pld 24, Won 11, Drew 3, Lost 10, GF 33, GA 32, Pts 25.
U10’s
Villa – Pld 24, Won 11, Drew 3, Lost 10, GF46, GA 43, Pts 25.
U10’s
Wdrs – Pld 24, Won 10, Drew 2, Lost 12, GF 43, GA 38, Pts 22.
U11’s
– Pld 28, Won 10, Drew 1, Lost 17, GF 49, GA 86, Pts 21.
U12’s
– Pld 28, Won 3, Drew 2, Lost 23, GF 34, GA 153, Pts 11.
U13’s
Colts – Pld 26, Won 18, Drew 1, Lost 7, GF 107, GA 51, Pts 55.
U13’s
Greys – Pld 26, Won 0, Drew 2, Lost 24, GF 28, GA 207, Pts 2.
U15’s
– Pld 22, Won 0, Drew 2, Lost 20, GF 26, GA 145, Pts 2.
Also
in this season, cup fever paid the Badgers a huge visit, with three
club sides contesting the semi final stages of their respective
Mercian Festival Junior Football League cup competitions.
Of
these sides, eventual U9’s Division champions, the L&BBFC
U9’s,
saw their aspirations of achieving a possible league and cup double
take a dive, when they surprisingly lost 2-1 to Ombersley Colts FC in
a game they seemed to have had the better of the exchanges in, but
just could not find the finishing touch.
Meanwhile,
their club mates, the L&BBFC U10’s Wanderers and the
L&BBFC
U13’s Colts, both made it through to their respective finals,
which
were to be held at Malvern Town FC, to become the first ever Badgers
squads to do so. En route, the Wanderers saw off eventual U10’s
Division One league runners up, Evesham United Robins FC 2-1, whilst
the Colts also defeated their eventual league runners up, Callowbrook
Swifts FC, 3-1 in their respective semi final tie.
In
a game that was more closely contested than the final score line
suggests, the L&BBFC U10’s Wanderers lost in their cup final,
5-1, to eventual U10’s Division One champions, Welland Junior
Lions
FC, in front of around 150 or so spectators. Having missed several
opportunities early on, the Wanderers were then forced to
‘chase’
the game soon after, having gone 2-0 down.
However,
the Wanderers continued to produce a creditable attacking display
throughout the tie, and despite pulling a goal back to make it 2-1,
they were somewhat unfortunate to have lost the game by such a
margin, as further missed chances proved costly in the end.
Defeat
also befell the L&BBFC U13’s Colts, who like their Wanderers
club mates, also succumbed to their respective eventual league
champions, Newtown Sports Junior Colts FC. A 2-1 score line reflected
just how close this game was, and it took a late extra time winner to
eventually settle this tie, in front of around 200 or so spectators.
However,
this was not before the Badger’s had given their many vocal and
colourful followers cause for hope with a great display that saw them
deservedly take a 1-0 lead into the interval! Furthermore, such was
the Badger’s impressive team performance, that striker and goal
scorer, Luke Stimson together with keeper, Nathan Walker, jointly won
the cup final’s ‘Man of the Match’ award.
Round
One defeats for our U12's, U13's, the Greys, and the U15's meant
their cup exploits were again short lived. The U12's went down 3-0 at
Oldbury Park Tigers FC, the U13's lost 4-2 at Worcester Wizards FC,
the Greys crashed 5-0 at Oldbury Park Tigers FC, and the U15's lost
5-3 against Worcester Raiders FC.
With
the Villa losing 4-1 against Burlish Olympic FC and the Albion
falling 1-0 at Ombersley Colts FC, these were the only two other club
sides to make it through to round two.
However,
the club's cup despair was somewhat short lived as it wasn’t long
after, that the Badger's first ever cup silverware was finally
captured. In the June of this year, the L&BBFC U13’s Colts
claimed the WFA’s Charter Standard Club’s U13’s Tesco
Cup.
Played on the Pershore High School Artificial Training Pitch (ATP) on
a league basis, the Colts proved unbeaten in their three
fixtures to top the league and thus become the first ever Badgers
squad to win a competitive cup competition.
This
season also saw a new club playing record being extended. The
L&BBFC
U13’s Colts sent the club record youth soccer win tumbling, with
a
14-1 win against Welland Juniors FC, beating the previous 12-0 win
set ironically, also by a previous L&BBFC U13’s side against
Lyppard Rangers Pumas FC in their 2004/5 campaign.
Also,
in winning the league title, the L&BBFC U9's powered their way to
a 9-0 win over Oldbury Park Tigers Stripes FC, to match the club
record set by the a previous L&BBFC U9's in the 2004/5
season.
Meanwhile,
this season also saw another club record being twice set! Firstly
L&BBFC U10’s Wanderers’ striker, Luke Simpson’s
effort
after only seven seconds, in a Mercian Festival Junior Football
League U10’s Division One match, against Worcester Wizards FC, at
Ralph’s Field Stadium, created a new club fasted goal record.
However,
later on in the same season, in the L&BBFC U9’s club record
equalling league encounter against Oldbury Park Tigers Stripes FC,
striker Zak Stimson’s four second effort almost straight from the
kick off, duly superseded this record in remarkable fashion!
In
rounding off the Club’s most successful season to date, the
Club’s
Senior Coach, Bosko Medakovic was acknowledged for the second time,
by the WFA, for his outstanding contribution to football over the
season, and was duly awarded recognition under the FA's Charter
Standard Football Volunteer Workforce Programme 2006/7.
Not
only was Bosko recognised for spending much of his time in the
service of the club, but also for his voluntary assistant coaching
duties at the newly created Worcestershire FA’s Player
Development
Centre of Excellence!
Season
2007/8
A
record twelve squads were entered for competition in the 2007/8
season, 1 x U8’s, 2 x U9’s, 1 x U10’s, 3 x
U11’s, 1 x U12’s,
1 x U13’s, 2 x U14’s, and 1 x U16’s represented the
club in the
Mercian Festival Junior Football League.
In
addition, the two Mini Boys and Girls Development Squads also
continued their sessions alongside. Sadly though, prior to the new
season kicking off, the ever improving U11’s Albion squad
surprisingly ceased to exist due to late staff and player
withdrawals, and consequently their entry in to this season’s
competitions had to be withdrawn.
Although
league titles eluded the Badgers this season, despite going close on
several occasions, the club nonetheless still had another successful
year. The debutant L&BBFC U8’s Spurs rounded off their first
ever competitive season impressively finishing as Runners Up in the
Mercian Festival Junior Football Leagues’ U8’s Division.
This
side also set a new club record as its’ defence only conceded a
meagre six goals all season! Furthermore, it has to be said that in
the process the Spurs team also set another club record, having kept
an amazing thirteen out of sixteen ‘clean sheets’ in
competitive
MFJFL games!
The
L&BBFC U9’s Rangers also had a fantastic season, finishing
Runners Up in their U9’s Division One campaign, whereas the newly
formed L&BBFC U9’s Rovers found life far more challenging in
Division Two, ending up with the ‘wooden spoon’. No wins to
speak
of, but two very creditable draws saw this squad avoid a season
without points!
As
for the Rangers, they set about their title challenge from the start
and with only two losses all season, both to league champions,
Evesham United Robins FC, they made sure no-one else was going to
have the better of them, winning their remaining fixtures bar one
draw!
The
L&BBFC U10’s United, another newly formed side this year,
also
found their league debut very challenging in Division Two. However,
to their credit the side managed to conclude their season in a
respectable top five finish, having recorded some very impressive
results along the way to their fifth place, to include a
‘treble’
win over Kempsey Colts FC.
Last
season's L&BBFC U9’s elected to skip a year group and play in
the U11’s Division Two as the newly named L&BBFC U11’s
Gunners. This side played the whole of the season predominantly with
youngsters who were still only of the U10’s age group, and
despite
having to regularly play against much older opponents, the Gunners
had another remarkable campaign, securing the Runners Up spot.
This
amazing feat saw this successful club side narrowly finish second to
Bromyard Town FC by just two points, having only lost three of their
twenty-two league games. They also managed to match the Club record
mini soccer win (9-0) with a victory over their U11's Villa club
mates.
However,
in what was their most impressive performance during this campaign,
even their 1-0 win over eventual champions Bromyard Town FC, still
left them just short of the mark!
The
L&BBFC U11’s Villa found life much tougher in the same
Division, following many personnel changes within the squad. That
said, this side continued to play their fixtures with fun in mind but
try all they might, they could not avoid finishing bottom of the
pile, having lost all their fixtures, and becoming the only L&BBFC
squad not to register any points this season. The Villains played
well throughout and on several occasions were only just defeated!
Meanwhile,
U11’s Division One side, the L&BBFC Wanderers, had their best
league season to date. Having lead the pack and remained unbeaten in
the league up until Christmas, the Wanderers seemed to hit a sticky
patch and lost several games in the process allowing their rivals to
take full advantage.
Nonetheless
the Wanderers quickly regained composure to eventually finish fourth,
their highest ever league placing! A fantastic 4-1 win over eventual
champions, Evesham United Juniors FC, was perhaps the most notable
highlight in what was another improved campaign for this young
L&BBFC
squad.
A
strong season last time round saw the L&BBFC U12’s pitted
against the best of the rest in Division One, and consequently they
found things somewhat heavy going, finishing in last place. However,
despite the challenge, this team also played well throughout and
deservedly defeated Warndon Villages Wolves FC, 4-2, after having
previously lost to them 3-0 and 4-3.
An
emphatic 13-0 win by the L&BBFC U13’s against Kempsey Colts
FC
proved to be the highlight of the season for this Badgers squad. The
result matched the previous club record youth soccer victory, 14-1
set by last seasons’ L&BBFC U13’s Colts against Welland
Juniors FC. Playing in Division Two, the Badgers had a much improved
season than their last one, as they eventually settled for a
comfortable seventh place finish.
The
L&BBFC U14’s Colts continued their impressive form with
another
title challenging season in Division One. Perhaps their most
accomplished performance came in a 4-3 win at last season’s
champions, Newtown Sports Colts. All the more impressive when you
take in to account that the Badgers were 3-1 down at half time! Add
to that a ‘double’ win over eventual league champions,
Evesham
United Juniors, and one might question whether this side should have
gone further than their final third place finish suggests!
Life
in Division Two for the L&BBFC U14’s Greys also proved more
successful than last year. With several new faces in the squad, this
side had their best season to date. A 4-0 win over Welland Juniors FC
saw this team register their first clean sheet since their mini
soccer days, and then a squad record 9-1 win against Droitwich Spa
Spartans FC, proved to be the highlight of this squads’ improved
fortunes.
However,
sadly due to an oversight, the Greys were deducted three points for
making one too many substitutions in the latter-mentioned league
game, which eventually served to deny them a top five finish.
Ironically, the final player they substituted was Sam Nelson, who had
notched seven of his sides nine goals on the day, to set a club
record for the most goals scored by an individual in a youth
game!
Meanwhile,
also having their best season to date were the L&BBFC U16’s.
A
comfortable 7-1 win over Kempsey Colts FC topped their list of
victories, which also included an impressive 2-0 win over Worcester
Raiders FC who had beaten the Badgers 6-0 in their previous league
encounter!
But
for the resignations of two other sides in this league, the points
tally for the Badgers would have been far greater, with the latter
squad having had the better of the exchanges between the teams in
question. As it was, their withdrawals condemned the Badgers to
another wooden spoon finish.
The
final MFJFL playing records for the twelve competing Badger’s
sides
this season read as follows:
U8’s
Spurs – Pld 16, Won 11, Drew 3, Lost 2, GF 43, GA 6, Pts 25.
U9’s
Rangers – Pld 16, Won 13, Drew 1, Lost 2, GF 43, GA 7, Pts 27.
U9’s
Rovers – Pld 16, Won 0, Drew 2, Lost 14, GF 7, GA 61, Pts 2.
U10’s
United – Pld 21, Won 6, Drew 4, Lost 11, GF 26, GA 41, Pts 16.
U11’s
Gunners - Pld 22, Won 17, Drew 2, Lost 3, GF 82, GA 16, Pts 36.
U11’s

U16’s
– Pld 15, Won 1, Drew 2, Lost 12, GF 14, GA 88, Pts 5.
(*
points deduction)
Meanwhile
in the knock-out competitions, first round exits befell most of the
L&BBFC squads this season in the various MFJFL cups, with the
exception of the U11's Wanderers, U14’s Colts and the U9’s
Rangers.
In
round one, the Rovers lost 1-0 at Westbury Celtic FC, the United lost
3-2 against Oldbury Park Tigers FC, the Villa fell at Kempsey Colts
4-1, the U12's lost 5-1 against Newtown Sports FC, the U13's went
down 2-0 at Droitwich Spa Dragons FC, and the U16's lost at Alcester
Town FC 5-2.
This
season also saw two club side MFJFL cup derbies in what was the first
time ever two L&BBFC teams have been drawn against each other in
competition soccer.
Last
season’s beaten finalists, the U11’s Wanderers, failed to
make it
through again this season. A keenly fought 2-1 'club derby' win
against their club mates, the U11’s Gunners in round one set them
up with a round two encounter against eventual cup winners, Newtown
Sports Juniors, which ended in a 1-0 defeat!
Having
knocked out club mates, the U14's Greys 10-1 in another round one cup
'club derby', the U14’s Colts were unable to return to this
seasons’ final to again face Newtown Sports Colts FC, and avenge
their defeat of the previous year. A closely fought 1-0 defeat at the
hands of Evesham United Juniors FC in the semi final stage saw them
fall just short of the mark in this respect.
However,
after two near misses in seasons past by previous L&BBFC U9’s
squads, the U9’s Rangers finally became the first ever club
U9’s
side to make it through to their respective final. A slender 1-0 win
over a previously unbeaten Welland Junior Lions FC saw them set
themselves up for a show down with Oldbury Park Tigers FC in the
final which was held at Malvern Town FC’s Langlands Stadium.
In
what was a pulsating encounter, the Gers went on to become the first
ever club team to lift a Mercian Festival Junior Football League Cup
– The George Goode Memorial Shield, with a marvellous display. A
Luca Adorisio goal, deep into the second period of extra time proved
the decisive moment as the young Badger's side eventually overcame a
plucky Oldbury Park Tigers FC, to win 1-0 in front of around 150 or
so colourful and vocal supporters.
In
the WFA County Cups, the clubs’ only representatives, the
U14’s
Colts were given a bye to the second round whereupon they hosted
Bredon Colts FC. In a game full of missed opportunities for the home
side, it was Bredon who eventually progressed through to the next
stage, thanks to a 3-1 win.
Three
club century milestones were achieved during the course of this
season. Firstly, U11’s Gunners’ player, Zach Stimson became
the
first L&BBFC player to score 100 MFJFL league and cup goals for
the club. He achieved this target on 15th
March 2008, with his fifth goal out of seven scored in an amazing
U11’s Division Two game against club mates, the U11’s
Villa. It
took Zach a total of 62 L&BBFC competitive MFJFL league and cup
games to achieve this feat, spanning almost a three season period! In
doing so, the youngster also set a new club record highest individual
score in a mini soccer game.
Secondly,
two other club members attained the distinction of becoming the first
L&BBFC players to notch 100 MFJFL league and cup appearances for
the club during the course of this campaign. Nick Medakovic of the
U14’s Colts achieved this feat during the period 2002/3 to 2007/8
playing his 100th
game on 7th
October 2007 against Ombersley Terriers FC.
Coincidently,
this was also matched by Nick Snowdon of the U12’s who completed
his century of appearances during the period 2003/4 to 2007/8,
playing his 100th
game also on 7th
October 2007, in a game against Oldbury Park Tigers FC.
Finally,
U12’s Team Coach and former Chairman, Stuart Snowdon, became the
Club’s first Coach to notch 100 MFJFL league and cup games in
charge of a team. Having taken charge of his first game on the
opening day, back in season 2003/4, Stuart completed his 100th
game as Team Coach, on 6th April 2008, in a match against Droitwich
Spa Aztecs FC. Only a short break early on in the 2007/8 season
prevented Stuart from achieving this milestone much sooner in this
campaign!
During
the close season, several L&BBFC sides took part in various
summer soccer tournaments and this year provided the club with a
great return. The inaugural Worcester, Bishop Perowne CE
College’s
Seven-A-Side Tournament 2007/8 saw the U11’s Gunners lift their
respective winners trophy following a fine 3-1 victory over Worcester
Colts FC in the final.
The
same squad then took part in the Worcester Raiders FC Seven-A-Side
Tournament 2007/8. Playing 7 games, winning them all, scoring 21
goals, and conceding 0, saw the Gunners secure their second small
sided soccer title of the close season, following a fine 3-0 win over
host’s, Worcester Raiders FC in the final. However, despite these
pre-season victories, fate was soon to have other ideas for this
young successful side!
The
club then made it five cup final appearances for the season, with a
double achievement in the Welland Juniors FC’s Seven-A-Side
Tournament 2007/8. Both the U12’s and U13’s made it through
to
their respective finals.
However,
the U13’s narrowly lost 1-0 to Newtown Sports Juniors FC in a
very
evenly contested final, whereas the U12’s were only just beaten
into second spot, by virtue of one goal in the dreaded penalty shoot
out, having drawn 1-1 with Warndon Village Wolves FC, after extra
time. The latter result being most impressive given that the Wolves
had already beaten the Badgers 3-0, in a previous group stage game!
Meanwhile,
the U8’s Spurs bravely battled their way to a semi final
appearance, losing on penalties to Pershore Town FC after a 0-0
stalemate, in the Nunnery Wood Colts FC’s Seven-A-Side Tournament
2007/8.
This
feat was all the more remarkable given that the Spurs had not
conceded a goal in open play throughout their group games and also in
the knock out stages; a trait that this side had seemingly carried on
from it's successful debutant MFJFL campaign!
Season
2008/9
The
2008/9 year saw the Badgers start the new season with even more sides
than before, thus setting a new club record with 13 squads as well as
it's two very popular U7’s Development Squads. 1 x U8’s, 1
x
U9’s, 2 x U10’s, 3 x U11’s, 1 x U12’s, 1x
U13’s, 1 x U14’s,
2 x U15’s, and 1 x Seniors (U17's) made up the tally.
The
Senior (U17's) squad decided to continue but would not be competing
in MFJFL league games other than in friendlies, as the MFJFL was
unable to run a league in this particular age group due to a lack of
interested clubs. However, this side was subsequently entered to
compete in the newly formed Worcestershire Football Association's
Men's County Futsal League!
Also
only permitted to play friendlies would be the newly formed U8’s
Athletic. Due to FA guidelines, the MFJFL were obliged to cease
running a competitive league for this age group, but would instead
arrange fixtures on a ‘friendly’ basis between interested
clubs.
Sadly
though, with too many players and staff moving on, the ever improving
and successful U11’s Wanderers squad was subsequently disbanded,
with a few of the remaining players joining up with their Villa club
mates.
The
club acquired use of a newly laid senior pitch in the neighbouring
parish of Rushwick. Courtesy of Rushwick Playscape, the pitch would
see the L&BBFC U12’s Villa and the L&BBFC U13’s
play
their home games there instead of the local village hall field, which
disappointingly suffered due to a lack of proper maintenance.
The
new season was barely two games old when disbandment befell the
successful U11’s Gunners side, this squad was suddenly and
surprisingly withdrawn from the league. Having lost several players
and staff over the summer break, the Gunners were unable to maintain
a settled side and further player and staff withdrawals early on in
the new season meant that this team was unable to fulfil it’s
fixtures. Sadly, the Club was subsequently forced to take the
decision to withdraw this U11’s team from the league!
It
seemed that the Club could be forgiven for thinking that that
it’s
‘U11’s Curse’ had struck again! Over past seasons, at
U11’s
stage, firstly the Albion then the Wanderers disbanded, and now the
Gunners followed suite, despite their close season successes!
Again,
the season provided another year of highs, lows, and near misses for
our remaining twelve competing sides. The lowest points of the
campaign obviously being the withdrawal of the U11's Gunners squad
together with the eventual demise of the U15's Greys squad; the first
time that any competing L&BBFC sides have had to be withdrawn
during the season!
As
usual, there were many 'highs' with most squads enjoying what were
better, but still challenging seasons. The newly formed U8's Athletic
fared well in their friendlies, forging a good team spirit and better
awareness of the game in the process. With fewer fixtures, the Latics
also spent much time on the training ground developing their skills
and abilities; preparing themselves in readiness for their eventual
MFJFL U9's competitive league baptism, next season!
The
U9's Spurs had a much tougher Division One season than last, but
still managed to produce another good campaign. Despite coming across
much improved opposition, a losing MFJFL Cup final appearance
together with the runners up spot in the league, saw this young club
side deservedly consolidate their position as one of the more
stronger sides in the MFJFL U9's set up.
Meanwhile,
even though our U10's Rangers ended up losing only one league game
all season and thus having a somewhat better league campaign this
year than that of the last; for the second season running, this side
finished in the runners up spot. Two league draws (1-1 & 0-0) and
a third round of the MFJFL Cup win (2-0) over eventual league
champions, Evesham United Juniors, saw the Gers just about get the
better of the exchanges against the only side to finish above them in
the MFJFL's U10's Division One!
A
great season of continual improvement saw the U10's Rovers complete
their best campaign to date finishing tenth in the MFJFL's U10's
Division Two. With a greater number of league games this season, the
side produced some fantastic performances that saw them achieve,
among other victories, their first ever league and cup wins, 2-0
versus Worcester Raiders FC, and 1-0 versus Welland Juniors Colts FC,
respectively.
The
side also noticeably maintained several 'clean sheets' in the
process! However their most impressive win came courtesy of a
fabulous 3-0 score line against Oldbury Park Tigers; a team that
earlier in the season had beaten the Rovers, 6-1!
Meanwhile,
the U11's United playing in Division One finished ninth and our newly
formed U11's Celtic who finished tenth in Division Two, both found
life tough in their respective Divisions. Despite this though, they
were both able to compete the full season, and produce some
impressive results along the way. Most notably for United was their
fine 3-2 win over Droitwich Spa Hawks FC; a side that had beaten them
4-0 earlier in the campaign!
As
for Celtic who finished bottom of the pile, they did produce a gritty
display to win 1-0 at home to Oldbury Park Tigers Stripes FC in the
first round of the MFJFL Cup. This result proved all the more
remarkable when you consider that the Tigers had comfortably beaten
the Celts twice in the league, 5-0 and 5-2!
Another
side to enjoy a better season were our U12's Villa. Playing in their
first ever youth season, the Villains found things rather hard going
but still managed to produce some creditable performances, finishing
in a respectable seventh place in Division Two!
Among
these performances, the most impressive was their 3-3 draw with
Newtown Sports Juniors Colts FC. Having lost 6-0 earlier in the
season to the Colts, the Villa found themselves trailing 3-0 at the
interval, in the return fixture. This time though, the Badgers' side
put in a rousing second half performance, in somewhat blizzard-like
conditions, which in turn saw them score three goals without reply,
to deservedly earn a share of the spoils!
The
L&BBFC U13's were again finding things tough in a very strong
single U13's Division. The side battled gamely throughout and did
manage to produce some good performances along the way. A fine 5-1
win over Arley Kings FC being the pick of their encounters that
helped land them a tenth place finish.
Meanwhile,
in what has undoubtedly been their best season to date since stepping
up from mini soccer, the L&BBFC U14's had an encouraging year in
Division Two. This squad was involved in a close campaign with
several other sides in trying to land the runners up spot; the title
having comfortably been claimed by Alcester Town FC.
Despite
beating eventual league runners up, Worcester Wizards, 2-1 on the
last day of the season, this Badgers side had to settle for a very
respectable third place finish, and along the way recorded a
comfortable 11-0 win over Evesham United Robins, their highest of
this campaign!
Having
been hit with a six point deduction by the MFJFL for failing to give
adequate notice in postponing two league games early on in the
season, and with several player changes over the course of this
campaign, the U15's Colts found things much tougher this time round,
than in previous seasons, finishing in sixth position in Division
One. Despite this though, in what was the highlight of their season,
the side battled it's way to another MFJFL Cup semi-final appearance;
their third in three season's running!
However,
U15's club mates, the Greys, didn't fare as well this season as they
had done in the previous year, in Division Two. A solitary victory,
3-1 against Westbury Celtic Youth, couldn't prevent the Greys from
looking likely to finish with the wooden spoon!
Sadly
though, this side was also unable to field a squad for it's final two
league games due to too many players withdrawing before the
season finished. Consequently, the side folded and their results were
duly expunged by the MFJFL.
Meanwhile,
life for our Seniors (U17's) took shape in the form of Futsal; the
Brazilian style of small sided soccer. Competing in the inaugural
Worcestershire FA County Mens' Futsal League, our Senior squad soon
found that that life was just as tough as it had been at youth level!
Despite
this though, the side did settle and put in some creditable
performances along the way. In particular, the Seniors notched a
great 6-3 victory over Worcester City Wanderers; a team who had
previously beaten the Badgers 12-1 earlier in the season!
The
final playing records for the ten competing Badger’s sides this
season read as follows:

In
the various MFJFL cup competitions, the Badgers were again well
represented in the latter stages of the knock out tournaments. Three
teams contested at semi final stage, with one making it through to
the final!
However,
round one exits befell our U13's who lost 4-2 at Droitwich Spa Aztecs
FC, our U14's who lost 4-1 at Alcester Town FC, and our U15's Greys
who crashed 7-0 at Northside Youth FC, before becoming defunct.
Meanwhile
our U10's Rovers losing 2-0 at Westbury Celtic Youth FC, our U11's
United losing 4-1 at Cradley Sports FC, our U11's Celtic losing
Wychbold Juniors FC, and U12's Villa losing 2-1 to Droitwich Spa
Conkers FC, all succumbed to defeat in round two of their respective
competitions.
The
L&BBFC U10's Rangers were unable to make it a return to the final
for the second year in a row. They went down in the cruellest of
fashions at a plucky, Ombersley Lions FC. With the scores level at
1-1 after extra time, and with the Ombersley keeper having produced a
great performance throughout the tie to deny the Rangers a deserved
winner, the young Badgers' side sadly crashed to a painful 5-4
penalty shoot out defeat!
Another
L&BBFC side to fall in their respective semi final was our U15's
Colts. For the second season running, the Colts had made it through
to the last four of the tournament, and just like the season before,
the Badgers were denied a place in the final. This time though, a 3-0
score line at Kidderminster Harriers FITC FC proved their
undoing.
Meanwhile,
the U9's Spurs narrowly won their semi final encounter at home to
Welland Juniors FC, 1-0, and would go on to face Newtown Sports
Juniors FC in the final at Malvern Town FC's Langlands Stadium, in
front of around 200 or so colourful and vocal supporters.
Sadly
though, soon after, the Spurs' semi final victory celebrations were
somewhat cut short as in the run up to the final, they were dealt a
cruel blow when their inspirational keeper, Ross Grimshaw fractured
his arm playing for Cheltenham Town FC U9's. The young Spurs' stopper
was all set to play in the final and only days before the game, fate
struck forcing him to miss out on what would have been his first ever
competitive final!
However,
in the Mercian Festival Junior Football Leagues' U9's Cup final
itself; the George Goode Memorial Shield; a much reshuffled Spurs
line-up put up a gallant display against a strong Newtown Sports
Juniors FC. Midfielder, Dan Medakovic, bravely agreed to play in an
unaccustomed role as keeper, whilst team mate, Jack Wild, pushed up
from defence in to midfield. Despite the young Badgers' side playing
some great football throughout this tie, they couldn't prevent
falling to a 3-0 defeat.
In
the WFA County Cups, the clubs’ only two representatives this
season, the L&BBFC U14’s and the U15's Colts were both
eliminated in the early stages. The U14's went out in round one,
narrowly losing 5-4 in a pulsating encounter at Worcester Raiders FC,
whereas the U15's Colts, having been given a bye to the second round,
were then also narrowly beaten 4-3 at home to Northside Colts FC.
Meanwhile,
in other cup tournaments that the club had entered sides in, events
proved fruitful for two of our squads. The U14's won the Worcester
Youth FC's Soccer Tournament beating MFJFL rivals, Welland Juniors
FC, 5-4 on penalties following a closely contested 2-2 draw in the
final, after extra time.
Whereas,
our U10's Rangers took part in the Fifth Oldswinford Youth FC's
Summer Five-A-Side Tournament. A hard earned 2-1 win over the much
fancied favourites, Halas Hawks Dynamos, ensured the Gers also came
home victorious. This result was all the more impressive given that
the Hawks had previously beaten the Rangers 1-0 in a group stage
game, and up until this encounter, had won all previous competitions
they had entered this season!
However,
a few weeks prior to this tournament success, the U10's Rangers also
again took part in the Nunnery Wood Colts FC Seven-A-Side
competition. Ever improving, the Gers battled their way through to
the semi-finals, but as luck would have it, they were drawn to play
their 'arch' MFJFL rivals, Evesham United FC, who went on to win the
competition. Despite a battling display on what was a cold day of
torrential rain, it took an exceptional strike from the Evesham
forward to settle this very evenly contested game, 1-0.
Also
worth a mention were the newly formed U8's Athletic. They
participated in Monmouth Town AFC's Seven-A-Side tournament. Only
able to play in non-competitive events due to FA guidelines, this
young side came away with an impressive record of having won four of
their five encounters against various teams from Wales; a return of
results that would have suggested a second place finish for the
Latics had the format been competitive!
Meanwhile,
the 2008/9 league campaign saw the U10's Rangers keep thirteen 'clean
sheets' in twenty two competitive MFJFL and Cup games, to match the
club record set by last seasons' U8's Spurs. Also matching a previous
club record were our L&BBFC U14's. Their MFJFL Division Two third
place finish equalled the effort of our U14's Colts, set the previous
season.
However,
a new club record was set during the close season. A three second
strike by U10's player, Joe Weaver broke the previous club fasted
goal record by just one second. Playing against Monmouth Town AFC in
a summer tournament, this young striker was quickest to react
straight from the start and within three seconds, neatly fired home
his side's first goal in a comfortable 3-0 win.
In
concluding another fine season, the club scooped several honours in
the Worcestershire FA's Charter Standard Workforce Awards 2008/9.
Club Secretary & Members Registrar, Carrie Chambers was
recognised for her duties in the Administration category. Also, Oscar
Hooper, Assistant Coach, was recognised for his coaching duties in
the Young Volunteers U18's category.
However,
Pat Lewis, Senior Coach – Girls, Futsal, and Community was also
recognised for his coaching contributions in the Coaching category,
and furthermore, he was also selected as the overall County winner
and as such was nominated by the WFA for consideration at the
National FA Awards.
It
wasn't too long after that the FA confirmed Pat as one of it's
national winners; another first for the club! An invitation was
extended to him to join other national winners as VIP guests at the
FA's prestigious Community Shield final, between Manchester Utd and
Chelsea, at the new Wembley Stadium, at which presentations were duly
made by the former Liverpool and Wales legend, Ian Rush.
Meanwhile,
under the FA's Charter Standard programme, L&BBFC claimed huge
success with it being granted 'Community
Club' status,
and in the process bypassing the 'Development
Club' status
-
the next stage under this programme! Achieving this magnificent
recognition meant that in just a little over eight years since the
club was formed, L&BBFC had progressed through to the pinnacle of
FA's charter standard football programme for clubs at a 'grass roots'
level.
By
far the greatest success this club had gained to date, this
achievement meant that the club could proudly boast an array of
quality provision and opportunities for it's staff, members, their
families, and local community, whilst also maintaining high standards
in a safe and structured environment. The award also meant that the
club could join a band of only a very few clubs in the county, to
attain this status; particularly as the youngest club to do so!
Sadly
though, it was during the summer of this season that the club was
devastated upon hearing news of U10's Rangers' Assistant Coach,
Alessio Adorisio, who lost his life in tragic circumstances. The very
popular and much loved 23 year old club colleague and friend died of
his injuries when his car was involved in a crash on the M5 motorway
just outside Worcester. A talented musician, Alessio was travelling
home alone from a music event when the incident happened.
Having
joined the club as a Volunteer Assistant in 2004 at the age of just
seventeen, Alessio gained his FA Level 1 Coaching Certificate in
2006, and was part of the successful coaching team that saw the U10's
Rangers win both league and cup honours in recent seasons.
As
a tribute to the young volunteer, using club funds together with
donations received in his memory, the club decided to introduce a new
award from the start of the coming season, the L&BBFC Fair Play
Remembrance Cup, which would be presented to the L&BBFC squad
that had attained the highest number of points under the MFJFL's
annual Fair Play Awards competition.
Season
2009/10
With
the new season ahead, the club was again able to field another bumper
crop of squads in the 2009/10 MFJFL. In all, 10 squads would make up
the Club's tally for the start of the new campaign; 1 x U8's, 1 x
U9's, 1 x U10's, 2 x U11's, 2 x U12's, 1 x U13's, 1 x U14's, 1 x
U15's.
In
addition, the Club would also continue with it's two long running and
popular Boys and Girls Mini Development Squads. Furthermore, the
Club's U18's Myths squad would again compete in the WFA's Men's
County Futsal League, alongside their older L&BBFC Legends
debutant club mates.
Following
the mid-season withdrawal of both the U11's Gunners and the U15's
Greys, the club's U15's Colts followed suite soon after the last
season's close. A lack of players and a suitable coach played their
part in the eventual demise of this previously successful squad.
However, with all other squads moving up a year group, this season
saw one new club squad emerge; the U8's Olympic!
Also
new for this season was the creation of further opportunities for the
club's older aged members. L&BBFC had established links with two
adult football clubs which enabled L&BBFC members aged over 16
years to link up with the clubs, offering them access to adult
football in the local leagues.
The
club's more senior aged players could now continue their pursuit of
safe and structured football through either Malvern based, Powick FC
or Worcester based, Hornets FC; the latter already being a recognised
Charter Standard Adult Football Club!
These
links immediately proved successful with several Malvern based former
L&BBFC members progressing on to Powick FC where they helped form
the basis of a third squad at the men's club, competing in the
Worcester & District Sunday League Division Three.
Prior
to kicking off their new campaign, the U11's Rangers paid tribute to
their former Assistant Coach, Alessio Adorisio, with a moments
silence ahead of their game with Welland Junior Lions FC; their first
competitive MFJFL game since Alessio's tragic death in the summer.
In
another mark of respect, this side was granted permission by the club
to temporarily break-away from wearing the traditional black &
white colours of L&BBFC for the season, in favour of a gold &
black 'remembrance' shirt. Sponsored jointly by Alessio's former
employer, the HSBC Bank, together with his uncle and U11's Rangers'
Team Coach, Franco Adorisio, the new shirt colours represented the
two local clubs Alessio was most passionate about; the black of
L&BBFC and the gold of the Hornets FC. The latter being the adult
club Alessio had played for. In addition, the new shirts would also
feature a one off logo depicting Alessio's name across a map of
Italy, his country of birth.
Meanwhile,
in terms of action on the pitch, the leagues again produced a mixed
bag of returns for the twelve L&BBFC squads with league honours
gained by some, improved campaigns by most, and lower placings by
others.
The
newly formed L&BBFC U8's Olympic had a fantastic season. Unable
to compete within a formal competitive league by virtue of their age,
the young Olympians were restricted under FA guidelines to only
playing friendly games.
However,
such was the success of their many friendly encounters, which saw
them beaten only once, that optimism and excitement was high amongst
the squad, as they looked forward to playing in the competitively
structured MFJFL U9's Division next season!
In
the U9's Division One, MFJFL debutants, the L&BBFC Athletic found
life challenging, but managed to put in some sterling performances
that saw them continually improve as the season wore on. Some notable
results were recorded and in particular their return encounter with
Westbury Celtic FC. After having been beaten, 8-1, in their opening
league game, the Latics showed great determination and improvement to
hold this side to a 1-1 draw and making them work hard for their
point the second time round!
After
going close in previous seasons, the U10's Spurs finally made it
third time lucky to land the MFJFL Division One title, and become the
first club side to win one in this particular age group. In what has
been a remarkable season for this squad, the Spurs secured the crown
with an emphatic 4-0 last match of the season win at title
challengers and defending champions, Newtown Sports Juniors FC.
Having
been pipped by Newtown to the league the previous two seasons, and in
addition to the league cup last season, this win not only halted the
trend but also in turn denied their opponents a possible second
consecutive double!
This
impressive league campaign saw the Spurs maintain their notoriety as
the meanest defence in the whole of the MFJFL, conceding only 5 goals
in 18 games, thus beating their previous best of 6 in 16 games set in
2007/8. It also included a fantastic 14 'clean sheets' to set a new
club record. Having been beaten only once all season in the league;
and that was on the opening day, the side then went on to string
together an impressive unbeaten 17 league match run to deservedly
land their crown.
Another
club side to enjoy a championship winning season were the U11's
Rangers. This squad had what has been a phenomenal campaign, even by
their very own impressive standards. Like their Spurs club mates, the
Gers had on two previous occasions finished runners up in the league;
but this was to be their year!
The
honour enabled the Rangers to become the first club side to complete
a league and cup double. In the process, this squad set a new club
record of only one defeat all season in both the MFJFL and Cup, as
well as an impressive 15 game winning run at the start of the
campaign; also a club record!
They
secured the crown with the final match of the season against a plucky
Westbury Celtic Youth FC. Needing to win this encounter to be
certain, the Rangers duly recorded a fine 3-0 home win in front of a
large and supportive crowd to cap off a fantastic year.
Meanwhile,
in Division Two, the U11's Rovers had a mixed set of fortunes and
finish in eighth place. The first half of the season saw this side
record several impressive results which suggested a much better year
lay ahead. However, following the Christmas break, the side found it
difficult to maintain their good start and subsequently found
themselves scrapping for points in the lower half of the league.
That
said, the Rovers did record some credible results which included a
league 'double' over local rivals, Newtown Sports Juniors FC. Winning
7-0 and then 5-0 in their two encounters, the former score line
enabled the Rovers to set what was for themselves, a new record
highest win!
Recording
their first ever competitive victory in the MFJFL, our U12's Celtic
showed great improvement on the previous year's campaign. Two closely
fought victories, 5-3 and 5-4, plus an amazing 5-5 draw all against
neighbours, Newtown Sports Juniors, ensured the Celts would avoid the
'wooden spoon' this time around. The latter result set a new club
record for the highest scoring MFJFL & Cup draw.
U12's
club mates, United, had a somewhat more fruitful campaign. This side
found life in Division Two more to their liking, and duly recorded an
improved points return that saw them finish in a very creditable
fourth place. Of their victories, perhaps their most notable were the
three club derby encounters with the Celtic squad. Three wins, 3-0,
3-1, and 3-2, ensured that the season's bragging rights lay firmly
with the United squad!
Incidentally,
due to ground improvement works at the Rushwick Playscape venue, this
squad were fortunate to be able to use one of the pitches in the
neighbouring village of Kempsey for hosting all of their 'home'
games!
Despite
a torrid campaign in which no points were gained, the L&BBFC
U13's Villa were able to complete their full MFJFL fixture programme.
With several player changes over the course of the season, the
Villains stuck to their task most admirably, to prove to others that
participation is better than no structured football at all!
On
the back of some demoralising results that would have had less
determined youngsters running away, the Villa players showed great
character to stick at things and start to improve as the season
concluded. If success was measured by a desire to want to play
football just for fun, then this Villa squad would certainly be clear
table toppers!
A
second consecutive tenth place finish saw the L&BBFC U14's almost
mirror their previous campaign in a tough U14's league. Of their more
notable results, this side completed a fine double over bottom club
Warndon Villages Wolves FC. Winning 4-1 then 8-2, the latter result
set a new record highest win at youth level for this particular
squad.
Finding
life tougher than last year were our U15's. A bright start to their
season in which they only lost once in their opening six games,
seemed to suggest a good year lay ahead. However, points became
harder to come by soon after, and despite some good results after the
Christmas break, this side had to settle for a ninth place finish. A
5-0 win over bottom club Droitwich Spa Dons proving to be their best
win of the season.
For
the second season running, the L&BBFC U18's Myths competed in the
WFA Men's County Futsal League. With a years experience of this game
already banked, this squad had an improved campaign, which culminated
in their finishing in a respectable fifth place, winning the 2010 WFA
County Men's Futsal League Plate, and in the process teaching their
aging club mates, the L&BBFC Legends, a lesson in futsal!
In
what was the first ever competitive meetings between these two adult
club sides, the younger and much quicker Myths dealt the Legends a
12–4 and 7-1 drubbing in their two league derby matches. The
latter
result securing the Plate for the Myths; their first ever trophy.
Made
up mostly of ageing former players picked mainly from the ranks of
the club's coaching staff and parents, the Legends found the going
tough as most other sides fielded younger and fitter players; a
difference that this squad often found too great to compete against.
However,
participate they did and despite their finishing bottom of the pile,
the side did manage to finish their season strongly with games being
much closer than expected. Furthermore, in what proved to be their
only win of the campaign, the Legends secured a fine 6-0 victory over
Bredon Cobras, a side that had previously beaten them 7-1, to
bizarrely become the only team to keep a clean sheet in the whole of
the league and cup all season!
The
final playing records for the eleven competitive Badger’s sides
this season read as follows:
U9's
Athletic – Pld 21, Won 2, Drew 3, Lost 16, GF 6, GA 62, Pts 7.
U10’s
Spurs – Pld 18, Won 14, Drew 3, Lost 1, GF 47, GA 5, Pts 31.
U11’s
Rangers – Pld 20, Won 17, Drew 2, Lost 1, GF 64, GA 18, Pts 36.
U11’s
Rovers – Pld 20, Won 4, Drew 2, Lost 14, GF 29, GA 72, Pts 10.
U12’s
Celtic – Pld 18, Won 2, Drew 1, Lost 15, GF 28, GA 114, Pts 7.

Legends
– Pld 10, Won 1, Drew 0, Lost 9, GD -39, Pts 3.
Meanwhile,
in the MFJFL Cup competitions early round exits befell almost all our
squads this season, with only the U11's Rangers progressing beyond
the early stages.
MFJFL
Cup debutants, the L&BBFC U9's Athletic sadly bowed out of their
respective cup competition in round one. In what was a closely fought
out encounter, the young 'Latics' side lost 1-0 at home to Droitwich
Spa Pumas FC. Despite the cold, wet, and windy conditions, the hosts
served up a great battling display that on another day, would no
doubt have given them a much deserved share of the spoils!
Last
season's U9's MFJFL Cup runners up, the U10's Spurs, failed to
negotiate a tough second round encounter at home to an unbeaten
Evesham United Juniors FC. After again losing their inspirational
keeper, Ross Grimshaw, for much of the game this time due to a minor
head injury early on, the Spurs side battled bravely but were unable
to convert their many chances, and were subsequently knocked out,
losing 2-0.
As
luck would have it, our two U11's squads were drawn against each
other in the first round. In what was also the first ever competitive
encounter between these two teams, Division One side, the Rangers
eventually won the tie, 5-1. However, they were given a tough time as
their battling Division Two club mates, the Rovers, held them at 1-1
going into the break, after having deservedly taken the lead in the
first few minutes of the match!
In
the U12's category, first round exits befell our United and Celtic
squads who were both drawn against higher graded Division One
opponents. United travelled to Wychbold Juniors FC and came away with
a 4-1 defeat, whereas as the Celts, who were also playing away, found
themselves on the wrong end of an 8-0 score line to Broadway United
FC.
Finding
life tough in the league, the L&BBFC U13's Villa were equally
challenged in their respective league cup campaign. Having been given
a bye to the second round, luck turned unkind as they were
subsequently drawn against last season's Division One league and cup
winners, Newtown Sports Juniors FC.
Starting
the game with only nine players due to some confusion over an earlier
kick off time and some subsequent late arrivals, the Villa found
themselves 6-0 down prior to their being able to field a full squad
of eleven. However, despite a spirited display in which many more
goals were prevented, the Villa succumbed to a final 24-0 defeat;
thus matching the unwanted club record also set by our U13's in the
2004/5 season against Norton Athletic FC.
Also
being given a bye to round two were our U14's. Like their Villa club
mates, they too were drawn against their respective perennial league
and cup champions in the guise of Oldbury Park Tigers FC. Despite a
spirited display, this L&BBFC squad could not prevent exiting the
competition to a 10-0 defeat.
As
it was, it proved third time unlucky for another L&BBFC squad.
Our U15's were also drawn to face their respective league leaders in
their second round encounter. However, having equalised early on
against a strong Droitwich Spa Saints FC, this Badgers squad was
eventually defeated 8-1.
As
for the U11's Rangers, they continued their cup run making it through
to the final to become the first L&BBFC side to compete in two
MFJFL cup finals, and also at this age group. The semi-final saw the
Gers come up against Droitwich Spa Rhino's FC. In an end to end
encounter, the young L&BBFC side eventually overcame their
battling opponents, 2-1, to book a place at Malvern Town FC's,
Langlands Stadium, against Welland Juniors Lions FC.
This
final saw the coming together of two U11's sides, who in their two
league encounters had shared the spoils; the Rangers winning the home
game 6-3, and the Lions taking the return game 2-1. The latter result
being one that eventually broke the Rangers' club record, fifteen
MFJFL game winning streak!
On
cup final day, it was the Rangers who eclipsed their opponents,
eventually winning 3-1 in front of some 150 or so colourful and
encouraging spectators. With both sides battling out an even 0-0
first half, an opening goal from midfielder Noah Martin, and a brace
from striker Ted Hill either side of a Welland penalty, ensured that
the Rangers netted their second MFJFL Cup. The win also allowed the
Rangers to complete the first half of their remarkable league and cup
'double'.
Following
the game, in a moment of poignant remembrance, Club Senior Coach,
Bosko Medakovic, dedicated the cup win to the memory of Alessio
Adorisio, who but for tragic circumstances, would no doubt have been
pitch-side cheering his squad on.
The
season saw four new club records being established. Firstly, in what
was their best season to date, the successful U11's Rangers won
fifteen consecutive MFJFL and Cup games straddled over a two season
period to set a new club record that started back in April 2009. The
run was eventually ended in February 2010, when the Gers visited
fellow MFJFL Division One contenders, Welland Junior Lions FC. In a
close game in which the visitors never really got into their stride,
the hosts won 2-1 to avenge their 6-3 mauling at the hands of the
Rangers, earlier in the season.
This
side then set a new club record for the fewest number of MFJFL league
and cup defeats a squad has encountered in a season. Their solitary
2-1 reversal at Welland Juniors Lions FC proved to be their only set
back in 25 competitive games played.
Meanwhile,
the impressive U10's Spurs also created a new club record. With the
reputation for being the meanest defence in the league, this young
side set about confirming this deserved label by beating the record
they themselves set two seasons ago. Their 15 'clean sheets' in 20
MFJFL league and Cup games beat the previous one set in 2007/8.
Their
only conceding 5 goals all season in the league in turn under-pinned
their desire to defend well throughout the campaign. However, the two
goals they conceded in their MFJFL Cup defeat, denied this squad the
chance to improve upon the club record they also set two seasons ago,
for conceding the fewest goals all season – that remains at 6 in
16
games!
Finally,
in drawing with Newtown Sports Juniors FC, 5-5, the U12's Celtic set
a new club record for the highest competitive score draw.
Off
the field, a club milestone was reached in January 2010, when the
club's regular monthly newsletter, clocked up a fantastic 100
consecutive monthly editions. Having been introduced by the Club back
in October 2001 as an effective means of keeping our growing
membership informed on matters affecting our being, the 'Badgers
Scene' as it is 'famously' known, rolled off it's one hundredth
edition at the start of the new decade.
Still
with it's original Editor, Neil Coleman, at the helm, this popular
publication had evolved from a printed first edition leaflet serving
some 60 or so readers, into an electronically produced and
distributed document that now served an estimated 600 or so avid
readers, to include members, parents, staff, supporters, club partner
organisations, and sponsors.
Throughout
this period, regular features included photo's, match reports, news,
views, statistics, and updates affecting the squads, the club, and
it's surrounds. It also provided some more 'light-hearted' features
with player and staff profiles, as well as the occasional football
quizzes.
In
March 2010, the club celebrated gaining five awards from Malvern
Hills District Council under the Hereford & Worcester Sports
Partnership's, County Sports Awards 2009. Oscar Hooper, Senior Coach
– Schools, was recognised as the District Council's 'Young
Volunteer of the Year', while fellow Senior Coaches, Bosko Medakovic
and Pat Lewis were recognised for their 'outstanding contributions'
to local sport. Carrie Chambers, was also recognised for her
dedication in sport, and nominated for the 'Volunteer of the Year'.
In addition, the club also received an award from the District
Council, as it's 'Junior Club Of The Year'.
Meanwhile,
the MFJFL had advised the club that of it's various squads competing
in the league, it was the U11's Rangers who had accrued the greatest
number of points under the MFJFL's Fair Play Awards. This
achievement, in turn ensured that this successful young club side
became the first winners of the L&BBFC Fair Play Remembrance Cup;
in what was another fitting tribute, to their former Assistant Coach,
Alessio Adorisio.
Our
U11's Rangers continued to extend their impressive season, with an
appearance in the final of the Nunnery Wood Colts FC 7 a Side
Tournament. A slow start saw the Gers narrowly progress from their
group into the last eight knockout phase in which they eliminated
Evesham United Robins FC (3-1) and then Warndon Villages FC (2-0) to
reach the final. Host club, Nunnery Wood Falcons FC were their
opponents, and despite a closely contested scoreless period of normal
time, the Falcons notched a winner in extra time to deny the Rangers
their fourth trophy of the season!
As
the season rolled to a close, in June three further awards were
gained by the club, this time under the WFA's Charter Standard
Community Awards 2009/10. Neil Coleman, Club Treasurer, Promoter, and
Newsletter Editor, received the 'WFA Volunteer of the Year Award',
whilst his son Jack, a Junior Volunteer at the club, got the 'Young
Volunteer of the Year Award' both for their outstanding contributions
to the game.
However,
to top off the club's best season ever, and in recognition of the
efforts of everyone connected with L&BBFC, the club itself
received the WFA's 'Charter Standard Community Club Of The Year
Award'!
During
the close season, the club saw two changes to key personnel within
it's Executive Committee. Pat Lewis was duly elected to replace
outgoing Chairman, Mark Smith, and Paul Weaver took over from Bosko
Medakovic as Vice-Chairman, due to the latter's club work load.
Season
2010/11
Kicking
off the new season saw the club enter eleven sides in the MFJFL, with
the two adult sides, the Legends and the Myths, and the two
Development Squads, running alongside as in the previous season. All
in all, 1 x U8's, 1 x U9's, 1 x U10's, 2 x U11's, 2 x U12's, 2 x
U13's, 1 x U14's, and 1 x U15's would make up the list of those
squads competing.
New
to the MFJFL this season, were the U8's Hornets who were formed and
progressed from the club's successful Development Squad, and the
newly created U11's Argyle. Sadly though, due to late player
withdrawals, the L&BBFC U16's were subsequently disbanded prior
to the season's start.
The
debutant U8's Hornets played a series of friendly encounters against
other similarly aged sides and fared rather well, with only a few
defeats. As with previous U8's club sides, most of the season was
spent on the training ground sharpening their skills and game
awareness ready for their entry in to competitive football the
following season.
Meanwhile,
in their first season of competitive football, the U9's Olympic had
an impressive campaign. The young Olympians played some great
football at times, and in the end finished some five points behind
eventual winners, Newtown Sports Juniors FC.
However,
despite matching their title rivals in their three head to head
league encounters, 2-1, 1-2, and 1-1, the Olympic couldn't quite
reduce the points deficit, and had to settle for joint runners up
spot along with Warndon Villages Jaguars FC, the first time a shared
final placing of this kind has involved a Badgers' squad.
Another
side to impress were the U10's Athletic, relegated from Division One
last season, the Latics found life in Division Two much to their
liking, and were one of the early contenders for the title.
However,
a series of defeats towards the end of the season saw this much
improved side slip behind the main runners, and having to eventually
settle for a very respectable third place finish, some seven points
behind champions, Warndon Villages Cougars FC.
The
U11's Argyle was a new team created for this season to cater for an
increase in membership at this age level. Playing in Division Two,
the Argyle had a very even campaign with a mixed bag of results that
saw them land a well earned sixth place finish.
Highlight
of their season was their fantastic 2-1 win against runaway league
champions, Worcester Raiders FC. This result was all the more
impressive as the Raiders only lost this league game all season, and
held a 100% unbeaten league and cup record until this encounter,
which included a 4-1 defeat of the Argyle on the opening day of the
season!
Meanwhile,
their U11's club mates, the Spurs found this season's campaign a
tougher one. Defending their championship crown, the Spurs came up
against much improved opposition that included a five team title
challenging pack that contested the crown throughout the season.
Although
the Spurs started their campaign off brightly with a 1-0 win over
eventual champions, Newtown Sports Juniors FC, they seemed to find
the going too tough at times and fell away from the chasing pack,
finishing in what was by their own standards, an unusual fifth.
Despite
this, a new and remarkable club record was set by our Spurs squad.
This side went on a thirteen month unbeaten league run which
stretched over two seasons. Having lost 2-1 at home to Newtown Sports
Juniors FC on the opening day of the 2009/10 campaign, which was on
5th September 2009, the Spurs remained unbeaten in the league until
they succumbed 2-0 at St John's Colts FC, on 9th October 2010, during
the following 2010/11 season!
The
impressive U12's Rangers continued their domination of the Division
One table with their second consecutive league crown. With two league
games to go, the Gers made sure of the title, with a well deserved
3-1 win at title rivals, Northside Colts FC. Late strikes from Ted
Hill, Noah Martin, and Joe Weaver completed a marvellous performance
that saw the impressive Badgers trail 1-0 with ten minutes of the
game remaining.
The
win not only clinched the crown but enabled the Rangers to complete a
league treble over their plucky opponents, in a campaign that also
saw the champions lose only one of their twenty one league fixtures,
to set a new club record.
This
achievement also saw this side become the first L&BBFC squad to
win a MFJFL league title at youth level.
Meanwhile,
the U12's Rovers had a similar campaign this year to their previous
one, which saw them finish the season in sixth place in Division Two.
A double win over bottom club, St John's Colts Athletic FC ensured
the Rovers avoided the 'wooden spoon'.
However,
the highlight of their season saw this young club side overturn a 6-1
defeat against eventual champions, Burlish Olympic FC, with a
marvellous 2-0 win later on in the year. This victory saw the Rovers
become the only side to beat the Olympians in the league this season.
Another
side to avoid bottom place were our U13's Celtic. Some gritty
performances gained the Celts several points that saw them finish in
eighth place in Division Two. In particular, their two amazing 3-3
draws with Malvern Town Wanderers FC certainly provided great
entertainment for those watching.
The
Celts also suffered some heavy defeats along the way, but somewhat
impressively
beat Worcester Raiders FC, 6-3, having lost 5-0 to them on the
opening day of the season.
Our
U13's United also showed steady improvement as they landed a sixth
place finish in Division Two. This campaign saw United suffer an
early season 7-0 defeat at Ferndale Flyers FC, but impressively, in
the return game this Badgers' squad won 4-1. In addition, United
recorded several high scoring victories to end the season with a
positive goal difference.
For
the second consecutive season, the U14's Villa failed to register a
league point in what was another torrid campaign. Despite the heavy
defeats though, the battling Villains gave their all throughout and
demonstrated a great sense and understanding of playing the game as
it should be at grass roots level.
The
Villa side competed well and completed another difficult campaign
that would have had demoralising consequences for other sides in
their Division. However, despite their strong team spirit and
character, this side could not avoid another Division Two 'wooden
spoon'. It has to be said though, that the Villa squad this season
was predominantly made up with players of actual U13's age.
As
if to compound their challenging time on the pitch, the Villa also
extended an unwanted club record for the highest competitive defeat.
Their 29-0 loss to Worcester Wizards FC saw this side replace the
previous record of 24-0, that they jointly held with our U13's of
2004/5.
Concluding
our list of competitive youth team representatives in the MFJFL were
our U15's. This squad also endured another tough campaign this season
and finished in eighth place in Division Two. Their total points haul
came courtesy of a double win over bottom placed Warndon Villages
Wolves FC, 8-1 and 3-0.
Somewhat
disappointingly, due to a review of the County Men's Futsal League,
the summer league was postponed by the Worcestershire FA, who decided
to run a more casual futsal coaching programme of sessions instead.
Aimed at encouraging greater awareness and participation, the
sessions were well attended by members of the Legends & Myths
squads. It was hoped that the league would again run, only this time
during the autumn period.
The
final playing records for the competitive Badger’s MFJFL sides
this
season read as follows:
U9's
Olympic – Pld 21, Won 13, Drew 4, Lost 4, GF 48, GA 28, Pts 30.
U10's
Athletic – Pld 18, Won 12, Drew 0, Lost 6, GF 54, GA 25, Pts 24.
U11's
Argyle – Pld 20, Won 8, Drew 3, Lost 9, GF 48, GA 55, Pts 19.
U11’s
Spurs – Pld 22, Won 11, Drew 5, Lost 6, GF 34, GA 17, Pts 27.
U12’s
Rangers – Pld 21, Won 18, Drew 2, Lost 1, GF 77, GA 26, Pts 56.
U12’s
Rovers – Pld 16, Won 4, Drew 2, Lost 10, GF 41, GA 64, Pts 14.
U13’s
Celtic – Pld 16, Won 1, Drew 2, Lost 13, GF 18, GA 118, Pts 5.
U13’s

U15’s
– Pld 12, Won 2, Drew 0, Lost 10, GF 16, GA 81, Pts 6.
Meanwhile
in the MFJFL cup competitions, only one club side was able to make it
through to their respective final this year, and that was the U12's
Rangers, who made it a second successive final appearance!
Of
the remaining sides that didn't, the U11's Argyle and U11's Spurs
were both eliminated, 4-0, in round one, to Oldbury Park Tigers FC
and Evesham United Juniors FC respectively, with the latter side
becoming eventual winners. In both cases however, it has to be said
that the games were much closer than the score line suggests, as both
Badger's sides contrived to miss ample opportunities to score.
Also
bowing out in round one of their respective cup competitions were our
U12's Rovers, U13's United, and our U15's. The Rovers lost out in a
5-3 thriller at home to Worcester Raiders FC, United fought bravely
but went down 2-0 away at Oldbury Park Tigers FC, whereas our U15's
crashed heavily, 9-1, at a strong Bewdley Town FC.
As for our other
sides, round
two eliminations befell our U13's Celtic and U14's Villa. The Celts
lost 8-0 at Kidderminster Harriers FitC FC, whilst the Villains went
down 18-0 at home to a higher graded and much stronger Warndon
Villages Vipers FC.
A
brave cup run by our impressive U10's Athletic was eventually halted
in round three. Our Division Two Latics came up against Division One
leaders, Newtown Sports Juniors FC and narrowly lost 1-0, having hit
the Newtown post twice. The result was all the more impressive given
that the last time these two sides met, the Badgers were emphatically
beaten 9-0!
Meanwhile,
in their MFJFL cup debut season, the U9's Olympic bravely battled
their way to an impressive semi final appearance. Playing at eventual
winners, Westbury Celtic Youth FC, the Olympians fought gamely but
sadly were knocked out of the competition with a somewhat surprising
2-0 defeat.
However,
making their third MFJFL cup final appearance in four seasons, were
our U12's Rangers. Winning the competition for the first time at U9's
and then last season at U11's age, the Gers were now looking to make
it a treble of victories.
Before
reaching the final, they had to contend a tough semi final against a
formidable, Welland Juniors Lions FC. It took a solitary strike from
the impressive Ted Hill to settle a tense encounter, and send the
Rangers through, 1-0, to their second successive cup final
appearance.
Ironically,
Welland were also the only side to again beat the Gers in the league
this season, which no doubt added further intrigue and intensity to
what was already a tough encounter!
Meeting
Worcester based, Northside Colts FC in the final, the Rangers went in
to this tie confident; knowing that they had already beaten their
opponents three times this season. Playing in front of around 200 or
so spectators at Malvern Town FC's Langlands Stadium, the Gers set
about their task.
Playing
the much better football of the two finalists, Rangers deservedly
went 1-0 up thanks to a great strike from forward, Sam Bullimore,
after fifteen minutes. His low angled drive flew into the far corner,
following a good break that saw him out run his marker to the ball
and cut in on goal from out wide.
However, back came the
Colts
and with around two minutes to go to the break, they equalised
following a corner, and midway through the second half, they scored
what turned out to be the winner.
Sadly,
the 2-1 defeat denied the Gers a second successive MFJFL league and
cup double, and also the club's first ever MFJFL Cup final victory at
youth level, in two attempts.
In
what was a first for the club, the Girls Development Squad were
invited by the Worcestershire FA to provide two teams to represent
them at the 2011 Regional FA Futsal Finals in Birmingham. Two club
squads were duly formed at U10's and U12's age. Both sides performed
well in their respective age groups, but alas, neither were able to
make it beyond the group stages.
Meanwhile,
away from the action, in December of this season, the battling young
Villa side received a most deserving acknowledgement from the Malvern
Hills District Council's sporting community. Despite not winning a
game in over two seasons, the L&BBFC U14's Villa were recognised
by the Council as winners of it's 'Junior Team Of The Year Award
2010'!
The
Villa were invited to a prestigious presentation ceremony where they
received their award in front of many of the District's other
sporting celebrities. They were also subsequently featured on local
radio station, BBC Hereford & Worcester, for their dedication to
wanting to play football just for the fun of it!
The
achievement proved to be a very proud moment for the club, as
receiving the award recognised that local football is about
participation for all, and the Villa side epitomised this week after
week. It further proved that it was not necessarily only the best
sides in the league that were able to play and enjoy the game as part
of a structured league.
This
season's winners of the club's Fair Play Remembrance Cup were the
U10's Athletic. This squad accumulated the most points for a L&BBFC
side under the MFJFL Fair Play Awards during the 2010/11 season, to
become only the second winners of this now established club honour.
Also
of particular note was the marvellous gesture made by club parent,
Marcus Fisher. In April 2011, Marcus took part in the London
Marathon, completing the course in a little under six hours. In the
process, his endeavours raised over £1000 sponsorship, which he
generously shared between the Worcester based, St Richard's Hospice,
and L&BBFC.
The
close of the season marked the Club's Tenth Anniversary. A special
presentation fun day was arranged to coincide with this mile stone
occasion. The event was held at Worcester City FC's ground and saw
club staff, members, and their parents, along with supporters and
sponsors take part in a series of football fixtures played on
Worcester City's pitch.
The
event was a huge success with around 350 visitors attending
throughout the day to watch the games and see the Club Chairman, Pat
Lewis, present all current members with a special commemorative medal
to mark the club's anniversary, in his first season in office.
Of
particular note were the special service awards presented to the
founding members of which from the original twelve youngsters who
were present at the very first club session back in July 2001, only
four remained, namely; brothers Nick & Chris Medakovic, Jack
Coleman, and Ollie Harcombe.
In
addition, the two founding coaches, Bosko Medakovic and Neil Coleman,
who were still very active within the club, were also duly recognised
for their services and involvement throughout the club's first decade
of existence.
Another
highlight of the presentations was the special achievement award
given to the young U11's Spurs stopper, Ross Grimshaw. Having joined
the club as an eager four year old, Ross soon developed into an
impressive goalkeeper and formed part of one of the meanest defences
the club has ever had; setting club records for the fewest goals
conceded in a season, the most number of clean sheets held in a
season, and the longest unbeaten run!
Having
been recommended by the club to Cheltenham Town FC of the Football
League at U8's age, the youngster flourished playing for the Robin's
at U9's, U10's, U11's and even U12's, and was officially signed by
the League Two club upon reaching U12's age at the end of the 2010/11
season.
Although Ross became
the
first L&BBFC player to progress directly on to a Football League
club, sadly, this meant that his time with the Badgers was now at an
end, but none the less, the club remained proud of his achievement,
and would continue to follow his progress with great interest and
pride.
Meanwhile,
at the Club's AGM, Vice Chairman, Paul Weaver announced his
resignation due to increased work commitments, but would continue in
post as an Assistant Coach with the Rangers squad. Club colleague,
Rob Shipton was duly elected to replace him.
Season
2011/12
Continual
growth within the club meant that this new season saw the Badgers
look to enter twelve sides in the MFJFL, with the two adult sides,
the Legends and the Myths, two new all girls squads, and the two
Development Squads, running alongside also. The make-up of the total
intended number of club squads competing in the MFJFL in 2011/12 were
as follows:- 2 x U8's, 2 x U9's, 1 x U10's, 1 x U11's, 1 x U12's, 2 x
U13's, 2 x U14's, and 1 x U16's.
New
to the MFJFL this season, were the U8's Borough and the U8's Orient
who were both formed and progressed from the club's successful
Development Squad. Also new were the U9's Vale who were specifically
created following an increase in membership in this particular age
group.
Sadly
though, due to player withdrawals and the absence of a replacement
coach, the L&BBFC U15's Villa were subsequently disbanded during
the close season. This side had struggled to gain on the field
honours over the years, and were well known for their desire to just
to be able to play football. As it was though, it seemed that season
2011/12 proved to be a season too much.
A
similar fate befell our U12's Argyle. However, this outcome was
expected as the squad was merged into the successful U12's Spurs.
This was part of an intentional move to accommodate this age group's
transition from mini soccer. Indeed, the Argyle squad was set up last
season with this change in mind.
A
surprising further blow was landed as the season was about to kick
off. Late player withdrawals meant that the long running L&BBFC
U16's also became unviable and were subsequently withdrawn from the
MFJFL. A sorry end to a side that had represented the club at all
levels from U8's through to last season's U15's.
Despite
the side over the years not enjoying much in the way of victories,
the U16's, who were coached by former club chairman, Stuart Snowdon,
were another club side who played for the sake of playing, taking the
results in their stride. Perhaps their finest hour came in their
finishing runners up in the Welland Juniors FC's summer tournament in
2007/8.
Known
as the U8's Cubs when they were first formed, and playing in the then
U9's Division of the MFJFL, the squad had seen many faces come and
go, however, like their Team Coach, there were still several members
who had been with the Badgers from their U8 playing days, which made
the demise of this squad all the more saddening.
Meanwhile,
new to the club and indeed the MFJFL, was the introduction of
intermediate football at U12's age. This meant that instead of
playing the traditional 11 v 11 football on a full sized pitch, using
full sized goals, the U12's would play a revised game of 9 v 9
football on a smaller pitch using smaller goals. This format was
recommended by the FA and based on their studies, proved to be a
progressive step in the transition of youngsters from mini soccer
into youth football.
Also
new to the club this season, was the formal creation of two all girls
squads, the U10's and the U12's. Given member interest and
enthusiasm, these two squads evolved from the popular Girls
Development Squad, and were set up to play in friendly fixtures and
small competitions, with a view to formally joining the MFJFL the
following season.
Having
represented the County FA the previous season in the Regional FA
Futsal Finals, these two squads were keen to continue their
experiences in competitive football
