L&BBFC U10’s Olympic Match Reports 2011/12

L&BBFC U10's Olympic 2 Vs 1 Oldbury Park Tigers

Saturday 7th January 2012

The Tigers first game of 2012 saw them come up against L&BBFC Olympic for the third time this season. The Badgers won the toss and elected to change ends, giving them an advantage in the first half of having the wind behind them. This led to the majority of the period being played in the Tiger's half, but they remained organised to prevent any real danger.

A couple of loose balls in the Tiger's box looked like they could cause trouble for the visitors, but these seemed to always occur with a visiting defender close by to clear up, before the home attackers could pounce.

With no score at the break, the Tigers felt they had a great chance to win the game in the second period, especially with the wind now in their favour. However, that was the case until about two minutes into the half, when the hosts won a corner. The ball was delivered into the box whereupon the Badgers' front man was seemingly allowed plenty of space in the area to get his head on the ball, and find the bottom corner of the net.

The Tigers didn’t let this get them down and, much like their hosts had done in the first half, they spent the majority of the second period on the attack. Their reward came midway through the half as a great move started by visitor's defender, on the edge of his own area, ended with the same player sending a cross in from the left to find his team mate unmarked in the box. He in turn, coolly applied the necessary finish.

The Tigers continued to push for a winner, and one particular effort forced a good save from the Badgers' keeper. However, with the Tigers pushing up, they were hit with a counter move as the ball was played out of defence up to the home striker. He turned his marker well, and then fired in a low drive past the keeper and into the net.

The Tigers tried to rescue a point but with little time remaining it was tough, as the Badgers defended doggedly. The Oldbury striker looked to have got himself half a yard on his marker in the home box, but as he shaped to shoot, a defender recovered to block his effort, as the ball looped up and landed comfortably into the Badgers' keeper's arms.

Oldbury Park Tigers 0 Vs 0 L&BBFC U10's Olympic

Saturday 17th December 2011

The Tigers again took on L&BBFC Olympic for a second time this season, after playing each other in the cup earlier in the year, in a game which ended 3-1 to the Tigers.

On a cold morning, the first half was a bit of a scrappy affair, with the Olympic probably just edging possession and territory. However, they found the Tigers defence in good form and could not really create much. Even with less possession, the home side created the better opportunities of the first half, but they were unable to take full advantage of two 1 on 1 situations when counter attacking.

With both teams struggling to settle in the opening stages, the hosts were confident they could take the game to their visitors in the second half.  However, the Badgers had different ideas and came out of the blocks quickly at the start of the half, pinning the Tigers back in their own half for long periods, but once again they found a resolute home defence.

In the final quarter of the game, the Badgers began to find a way through the home defence, and on several occasions, the Tigers had their keeper to thank for keeping them in the game. Throughout the second period, Tigers struggled to get going and this was summed up by the fact that they failed to get a shot on target for the entire half.

After the match, the Tigers Team coach claimed 'great credit must go to the Badgers today, who were like a different team to the one we played in the cup earlier in the season. They really made it difficult for us to play today and I don’t think anyone could have argued if they had taken both points from the game'.

Oldbury Park Tigers U10's 3 Vs 1 L&BBFC U10's Olympic

Saturday 12th November 2011

The second round of the MFJFL cup saw the Tigers with another very tough game at home to Leigh & Bransford Badgers Olympic. Before the game the Tigers were warned they would need to be on top form to progress and top form they were in!

From the kick off the Tigers were in determined mood, allowing the opposition no time or space on the ball and stringing a few passes together when they had the ball. The good start paid off after about four minutes when a corner fell in the box and the Oldbury striker was first to react to smash into the roof of the net from about two yards out.

The rest of the half continued in a similar fashion, with the Tigers closing down very quickly, not allowing the Badgers to play and then picking some nice passes when they had possession.

A second Tigers goal came mid-way through the half and it was an excellent team goal that started with inside their own half,  and four touches, four passes, and four players later, the ball was tucked away into the bottom corner, despite the best efforts of the visiting keeper.

The second half saw the Badgers come out determined to get back into the game but they found themselves up against a resolute Tigers defence, and on the one occasion they managed to break through the home keeper was quickly off his line to make an excellent save.

With four minutes left the Badgers got themselves a way back into the game with a speculative shot that somehow escaped keepers' grasp and found the bottom corner of the net. For the last few minutes of the game the Badgers threw everything they had at the Tigers but still could not find a way through.

Then, with the very last action of the game the Tigers broke out and won a throw in mid-way inside the Badgers half. The ball fell behind the Badgers' defence and as the Badgers keeper came out to narrow the angle, the home striker slotted the ball past him and into the net.

Warndon Villages Jaguars U10's 2 Vs 3 L&BBFC U10's Olympic

Saturday 17th September 2011

The Badgers made it two wins out of two.....but only just, in this evenly contested MFJFL U10's Division One encounter.

The Olympians fell behind after 5 minutes when a Jaguars cross from the left was despatched by their incoming centre forward. The rest of the first half saw chances at each end, but a solitary goal remained all that separated these two sides going into the break.

The Badger’s closest effort came when Jack Baker hit the post with a long range shot.  This was then followed up well by Tom Otley, but the Jaguars' keeper made a great save to deny him. The loose ball then fell to Jack Sankey, who placed the ball just wide of the upright.

The second half remained an end to end affair throughout. The visitors almost scored straight from kick off with a good passing move involving Jack Baker, Danny Weaver and Jack Sankey, but the final shot again went just wide.  Good pressure by the Badgers, down the right hand side, saw a cross fall to the left foot of Jack Sankey who despatched it into the far corner for to level the score.

The home side pressed as the Badgers found themselves under some increased pressure, and it was not surprising when the hosts struck again to make it 2-1.  Having been substituted at half time, leading lady Erin Smith returned to the field to add strength to the Badgers' defence which in turn allowed Alex Lowe to push further up the field.

The Badgers began to fight back and from a high corner, they drew level again. Alex Lowe's cross found the head of Jack Sankey who scored a great header to make it 2-2.

The last ten minutes of the game were frantic, a Jaguars break through the middle saw visiting keeper, Gianluca Carl come off his line very quickly to make a brave and vital interception just outside his box.

However, going into the last five minutes of play, a Badgers cross from the right found Alex Lowe who, just like in the same fixture last year, knocked in what prove to be the winner.

After the game, Team Coach, Dave Baker claimed, 'This was a very good battling performance from the Badgers and we were delighted to come away with a hard fought win'.

L&BBFC U10's Olympic 4 Vs 0 St John's Colts United

Saturday 10th September 2011

A superb first half performance saw the Olympic kick off their season with an impressive 4-0 victory at home to newly promoted Worcester based, St John's Colts United.

Played at a dry and bright Ralph's Field Stadium, the hosts determinedly set about securing their win with a blistering first half salvo, in this MFJFL U10's Division One encounter. All four goals came in the first half.

The opening goal was an outside of the foot shot from the right by Olympian striker, Jack Sankey.  These were soon followed by two right foot strikes from the left hand side, the first by fullback, Alex Welch and then an effort from midfielder, Danny Weaver.

However, despite numerous chances in the second half the Olympians could not add to their goal tally. That said, a stunning triple save from the Colt's goalkeeper was worthy of note as was a long range strike from Jack Sankey that rattled the visiting side's upright.

A delighted Team Coach, Dave Baker claimed, 'This was a real team performance with everyone contributing.  Ben Hoad was impressive at the back and on the few occasions that he was beaten, Gianluca Carl came to his aid and looked solid in goal. Well done everyone, on a great start to the season'.
